Weekly Reading Round-Up

It’s been a week of dark and atmospheric books, starting with Wendy Webb’s The End of Temperance Dare, a ghost story set at a tuberculosis sanatorium turned writers’s retreat, with all the attendant eeriness you can imagine. Highly recommended for a dark and stormy afternoon, preferably with tea.

From there, I moved on to a Ruth Ware binge, starting with The Woman in Cabin 10, a novel of psychological suspense set on the high seas, in which an inebriated and edgy journalist thinks she sees a body go overboard– but has she really? And who was the woman in Cabin 10, which everyone tells her in empty?

I’m currently in the middle of another Ruth Ware, The Lying Game, and loving it. There’s something about the clarity of the first person voice in her books that makes me think of Mary Stewart. And, without spoilers, I can say that there’s also something reassuring about knowing that no matter how dark the narrative gets, it usually turns out well in the end. I do like that in a book.

What have you been reading this week?

I loved the Woman in cabin 10. And was looking for other
Books by that author. I’m listening to Juliet by Anne Fortier and loving it as I drive across the country. And I’m reading The Girl in the Castle by Santa Montefiore.

In the middle of Tasha Alexander’s second Lady Emily book, A Poisoned Season, while also taking in some books from the library. I started the Hildafolk series of graphic novels, which are FABULOUS! Think young girl heroine, Scandi, mythology all around and everyone knows about it, so sweet and so perfect!

I’m reading Miss You, two people that keep meeting and just missing each other through the years.

Needed something lighter this week, so breezed through Love and Other Words, new release by Christina Lauren. Enjoyable, and enlarged my vocab by one: limerence 🙂

I finally got around to “reading” Jasper Fforde’s The Eyre Affair on audio over my MDM weekend roadtrip – so much fun. I’m also reading Goodnight June by Sarah Jio (she imagines a possible inspiration for Margaret Wise Brown’s Goodnight Moon and weaves it into the story of a woman fighting to save an historic bookstore), and just started a book about the rise and fall of the Caesars that will probably last me for at least a month.
