Weekly Reading Round-Up

It’s back to winter here in New York! (Um, spring? Where did you go?) On cold and drippy days, what could be better than a classic mystery?

I revisited Agatha Christie’s The A. B. C. Murders and Arthur Conan Doyle’s The Adventure of the Dying Detective. Now I’m trying to decide whether to move on to something new or keep up the trend with some vintage Charlotte MacLeod.

What have you been reading this week?

I am reading Karen Rose’s Edge of Darkness. Have been reading Jacqueline Winspear’s Maisie Dobbs series but am taking a break and I have enjoyed them so much.

I saw The ABC Murders popup on Kindle Deals a few times this week and was thinking I should re-visit it sometime soon. I’m appreciating Christie’s writing more now than I did in my early 20’s. 🙂

I’ve been flipping around a lot this week, but in the fiction realm I finished The Sixth Day (#5 in Catherine Coulter & JT Ellison’s “A Brit in the FBI” series); a compilation of short stories by Georgette Heyer called Snowdrift and Other Stories (perfect bedtime reading!); and By the Book by Julia Sonneborn, a fairly tolerable modern-day take on Persuasion.

My current read is a brand-new novel, How to Walk Away by Katherine Center, at the recommendation of a friend.

Ditto about appreciating Christie’s writing more now! I loved the stories– I’d grown up on the PBS versions– but found her writing style a little flat back when. But I’m finding the writing more skilled than I remembered.

I still think of The Dying Detective every time I eat oysters. <3 I just reread The Tricking of Freya by Christina Sunley. It's one of those novels that I reread at least once a year or so. I recommend it wholeheartedly for anyone interested in Iceland and Icelandic culture. Now I'm starting on Mary Stewart's This Rough Magic. Speaking of Agatha Christie, is anyone else here in love with Margaret Rutherford as Miss Marple in the 1950s movies? Her version of the character is nothing like what Christie wrote, but utterly wonderful.

This Rough Magic is my favorite Mary Stewart!

I’m reading The Summer Before the War by Helen Simonson and really enjoying her writing style.

Absolutely enjoyed A Court of Frost and Starlight –kinda like a holiday special, in that it took place over winter Solstice, with an emphasis on family/friend gatherings and gift-exchanges, and there was not threat of imminent death hanging over everybody 🙂

I just finished it too! It was amazing 🙂 I’m psyched for the next book in the series. Nesta X Cassian please!

        Absolutely! Love the Nesta/Cassian dynamic!!

I’ve started a re-read of Tasha Alexander’s Lady Emily series, it’s nice to revisit old friends!

I’m reading Truthwitch by Susan Dennard, and it’s wonderful! Two best friends in a world full of different kinds of witches and magic…what’s not to love?

I just found author Jo Goodman and read her Thorne Brother’s series. I really this series and while they are a standard historical romance style these seem to be a little longer/meatier which I liked a lot! I’m not sure how I never heard of her before since these were published 20 years ago but better late than never.

I just finished The Perfect Stranger by Megan Miranda. It was an excellent psychological suspense thriller similar to Gone Girl or Girl on the Train. It was so creepy and thought provoking. Themes like do you ever really know someone and how our suspicions and perceptions color our perspectives and how we view truth. I definitely recommend!
