Weekly Reading Round-Up

Do you ever have those weeks when you pick up books and put them down again? I’m sure they’re very good books, and books I might like at another time, but they just weren’t holding my attention– so I gave up on them and picked up Joan Aiken Hodge’s Marry In Haste.

I wasn’t sure whether I’d like it– I’d read a bit of Hodge back in my teens and found her books problematic, darker than the Heyer and Holt I preferred– but this time it was absolutely the right book at the right time. A marriage of convenience, Napoleonic spies, English agents, Portugal in 1807 (and we all know what happened in Portugal in 1807! Or, at least, if you read my The Lure of the Moonflower, you do), so I’m absolutely loving it, and delighted to have broken my blah reading streak.

What have you been reading this week?

How very interesting that you read the same Joan Aiken Hodge book I did. she is a rediscovery for me too, and a delightful one.

I just finished The Silent Companions by Laura Purcell. I loved it — a haunted house story with strands set in the 1630s and the 1860s, and lashings of classic gothic atmosphere. There’s also a lovely little cameo appearance by Charles I and Henrietta Maria — always dear to my Romantic heart.

I’ve been a great fan of Joan Aiken all my life, but I never knew until now that she had a sister called Jane who was also a writer. I can’t wait to start reading her books!

I’m reading Why Kill The Innocent by C.S. Harris. It’s good, but not as good as her last one Where The Dead Lie. Marry In Haste is one of my favorite Jane Aiken Hodge books along with Savannah Purchase.

Marry in Haste has continued to be one of my favorite books ever, but isn’t the author Jane Aiken Hodge?

I just finished To Capture What we Cannot Keep by Beatrice Colin. A Historical fiction story about some of the people who were integral in the building of the Eiffel Tower. It’s a sort of love story combined with descriptions of the engineering and structural feats of building the tower and the Panama Canal since Eiffel was part of both projects. I learned a lot about life in Paris in the late 1800’s and the two building projects. I’d recommend it.

I am FINALLY back in a reading mood, after adjusting to my school district job’s hours…with only 4 weeks of school left, of course. But it’s been a busy week! I finished Christopher Moore’s newest, “Noir,” blasted through “A Court of Wings and Ruin” by Sarah J. Maas, started a new-to-me shojo manga series, “Maid-Sama,” re-read Stephen King’s “Carrie,” (with a new personal record of 2.5 hours total reading time) and finally, been devouring Karen Marie Moning’s “Feversong.” I have fit in some textbook reading, too; just started my Psychology for Educators course.

I finished “I’ll Be Gone in the Dark” which felt incomplete, obviously because Michelle McNamara died before finishing it, but it really felt it. Now I’m reading “Codename Villanelle” because I can’t get enough of “Killing Eve”!
