Weekly Reading Round-Up

Mostly, I’ve been reading research books about 19th century Barbados this week, which, while absolutely fascinating, don’t really qualify as light reading. (But if you want to know about liminal groups in late 18th century plantation culture, I’m your gal!)

For fun, though, I finally picked up Maureen Sherry’s Opening Belle, an incisive satire about the indignities of being a woman on Wall Street and Upper East Side life in general. This is all familiar turf to me, so it’s been very enjoyable to read a book that gets it right.

After that… I’ve been thinking of picking up The Magpie Murders. Or maybe some Lord Peter Wimsey.

What have you been reading this week?

My husband and I honeymooned in Barbados almost 30 years ago. We stayed at Sam Lord’s Castle– I remember the gorgeous beach and property!

I finished Donna Alwards Deck the Halls and Samantha Chase’s Holiday Spice……..the holiday book season is here!
    Enjoyed both of them.

Huzzah for holiday book season! Once I’m done with my Mandatory October Spooky Reads, I’ll have to dig in….

Death in a Mood Indigo, which may be my favorite Merry Folger yet!

      I loved that one, too!

I’m picking and choosing my way through NPR’s best romance books list. This week I’ve read Joanna Bourne’s Spymaster’s Lady. Love the heroine! And Velda Johnston’s House of Illusion. Enjoyed it thoroughly.

I’ve never heard of any of those books, Susan. I think my TBR pile may have gotten a little taller.

I second the rec for “Spymaster’s Lady”. Such a cleverly written book. Also, spies.

I just finished re-reading “A Clockwork Angel” by Cassandra Clare. Felt like re-reading her books, but in chronological order. Then I jumped into the first Lady Emily mystery, “And Only to Deceive.” I am enjoying Tasha Alexander’s style, have already gotten through about half of it! I have school reading to do; my health textbook, such joy. But I’m FINALLY working on my B.A. for Elementary Education, so I’ll endure! If I get time to pleasure read this weekend, I’ll finish Alexander & move onto Deborah Harkness’ “Shadow of Night.”

I have not read A Clockwork Angel by Clare, but I’ve read all six of her Jace/Clary books. How does it fit in with that cast of characters?

Also, the Lady Emily series is superb. I hope you enjoy your reading of them. I remember reading the third book in the series, A Fatal Waltz, in one night. I didn’t sleep at all. So, be warned. 🙂

Good luck with your course load.

The Lady Emily series is wonderful!

Why does work mean no time to read? Still on Nick Frost’s autobiography, good, but too much time on kibbutz literally… hopefully will start The Subtle Knife later tonight…

Just finished Love in the Afternoon by Lisa Kleypas, which I think I first learned about here (SO GOOD!) ? Also got to A.M.S’s 44 Scotland Street (couldn’t get into) and The Little Book of Life Hacks by Yumi Sakugawa (so good… I’m not a graphic novel lover but now I’d like to try more of them). And the extra chapters Lauren posted of course!

My husband and I have spent a lot of time in Barbados, I’m excited to read your upcoming book. I read Opening Belle and loved it- it made my end of the year best of list. I’m reading Jenny Colgan’s Christmas at the Little Beach Street Bakery right now, it’s as wonderful as her other books.

The Barbados talk got me thinking of the book I read a while ago by Michelle Moran called The Second Empress. Pauline Bonaparte, Napolean’s sister, has some narratives in the book whilst in Haiti, and they have a distinctly Caribbean feel.

I loved her book that lead to that one too, Madame Tussaud!

I really liked her Egypt books too 🙂
