Weekly Reading Round-Up

There are some weeks when you just need a Georgette Heyer novel. This was one of them. So I pulled out my battered old copy of one of my top ten Heyers, The Talisman Ring, which contains some of my absolute favorite comic moments (such as the hero’s absolute refusal to ride ventre a terre), involving smugglers, a missing ring, a man framed for murder, and, of course, plenty of comic side characters.

From Heyer, it was an easy jump to the antics of the third book in the Invisible Library series: The Burning Page. If you haven’t encountered these yet, they’re a little Jasper Fforde and a little The Librarians.

Now I have a big decision ahead of me: reread the first of Laurie King’s Russell and Holmes mysteries, The Beekeeper’s Apprentice (which I haven’t read since it came out lo these many, many years ago), or dig into some British chick lit with a new (to me) Veronica Henry?

I just picked up “A Discovery of Witches” by Deborah Harkness. My girlie Allyssa has been begging me to read it for ages, so I’m finally digging in.

I read your opening line on FB and thought, my Go-to Heyer is The Talisman Ring. Then I clicked on here…great minds! ❤❤❤

Skip The Beekeeper’s Apprentice, it’s just too creepy, as in it reads like Holmes is “grooming” the young girl. I REALLY didn’t like it. But in good reads I’ve just finished rereading The Golden Compass and my weekend consists of The Subtle Knife!

Ah, The Beekeeper’s Apprentice was so good! I can never stop there, but have to continue with the 2nd in series, A Monstrous Regiment of Women, when I reread ’em. I think that’s one series that just gets better as it goes. This week, picked up Juliana Gray’s A Strange Scottish Shore and can’t wait to dive in! Will be seeing her at Poisoned Pen tomorrow 🙂

I LOVE BEEKEEPER’S APPRENTICE! The whole series, really, but I would ALWAYS vote for a cozy reread of the first one. As for me, I finally got my hands on the new Susan Elia Macneal book, The Paris Spy, and it’s so good! I was tempted to call in to work today so I could finish it 😉

I have never read Heyer, but I want to. I just finished Pine Lake by Amanda Stevens and Just Like Heaven by Julia Quinn.

Just started Monsoon Summer by Julia Gregson. An english girl headed to post independence India.

Just finished A Most Novel Revenge by Ashley Weaver! I love Amory and Milo Ames. I love how Milo loves Amory in his dry and ironic and sophisticated way – he is far too debonair yet so very attractive.

Went back and finished off Never Mind the Bullocks by Vanessa Able. A Brit who decides to drive the circumference of India for 10,000 KMs in a Tata Nano. Pretty good – too much about the car not enough about the people and the culture until the last bit of the book which was too bad. Though I would still read her again.

I’ve loved each Mary Russell book, ever since I first got “The Beekeeper’s Apprentice”! Such a great re-read…but this week I’m re-reading the Jodi Taylor “Chronicles of St. Mary’s” time travel books. So. Much. Fun.
