Weekly Reading Round-Up

This week, I’ve been on a binge of Elly Griffith’s Ruth Galloway series, about a forensic archaeologist who finds herself drawn into police investigations. (Many thanks to my best friend for the recommendation! And to my husband for making a large pile of the books magically appear.) It’s a little bit like reading a DCI Banks episode.

Up next on the TBR pile is Kate Morton’s The Lake House, which I am ashamed to admit I haven’t read yet.

What have you been reading this week?

That was me last year when I discovered the Ruth Galloway series! I’m doing a Harry Potter reread and finished The Goblet of Fire this week. I also started Kate Atkinson’s “Life After Life”. Have you read it? What did you think?

I didn’t like “Life After Life.” It was so hugely disappointing because I’d liked other books she had written before and it got so much buzz. (going back to my Goodreads review for notes…) The concept seemed really interesting, but it just got so repetitive in the beginning. The middle chunk was pretty good, but the end was really all over the place and I had no idea what was going on. Also character development was pretty poor. I kept forgetting that one of the siblings existed because there was so little said about him.

Loud cheers! I’m a howling, dancing, slavering Kate Atkinson fan. 🙂 It makes me so happy to think that you get to read one of her books for the very first time.

I reread the Harry Potter series every summer 🙂

        Me too!

Finished Wintersong, which was excellent. Next up, V.E. Schwab’s A Darker Shade of Magic. And next week, Claudia Gray’s new one, Defy the Stars, comes out… not gonna lie, *really* looking forward to this one!

I read A darker Shade of Magic, and although this is not a usual genre for me, I will probably finish the series, as long as I can get it from the library. I really liked Lila.

Am also continuing with Flavia de Luce, another spunky girl.

Vanora Bennett’s Figures in Silk was very well written, and opened my eyes to an unknown to me facet of the 15th century, women’s role in silk making. Fascinating.

I’m struggling to finish the second book after A Darker Shade of Magic… there really isn’t a plot, but there is a lot of Lila.

      Huzzah to Flavia though!

Actually, I’ve been rereading the Pink Carnation series… Or, in some cases, re-listening to the audio. Remembering again all the things I love about the series.

      Isn’t Kate Reading wonderful? 🙂

      • Tara on April 1, 2017 at 7:34 am

Heck yes! She has one of the nicest recording voices. You should also listen to Rosalyn Landor. She is incredible.

What does Rosalyn read? I love audiobooks, but the narrator can be so hit or miss, I love suggestions!

Some Philippa Gregory, Alison Weir, and other historical fiction authors.

          Okay, thanks!

Right now I’m reading The Girl From Paris by Joan Aiken. Our heroine, a humble instructress at an academy for young ladies, has just been drafted into taking the part of Hamlet in the school play: a turn of events after my own heart.

I read Murder on Lexington Avenue, one of the Gaslight Mysteries series by Victoria Thompson. This was the first book of hers that I’d read (a gift from family) and I’ll definitely read more. I don’t often go for American-set books but this was engaging–1890s New York City and murder and scandal on the upper west side. I figured out whodunnit before the end, but that’s not a bad thing.

I’ve been working my way though all the Barbara Michael (Elizabeth Peters) books I never got around to before for the last several weeks. There are a lot of them and I especially enjoy some of the later ones.
