Weekly Reading Round-Up

Perhaps it’s something about fall, but I’ve been on an old school Gothic kick this past week.

I started with Anna Lee Huber‘s upcoming book, Secrets in the Mist, a Regency set Gothic involving misty marshes, a mysterious creature named “The Lantern Man”, and, of course, smugglers.

From there, I moved on to some old Elsie Lee comfort reads. For those of you who haven’t discovered Elsie Lee, think Mad Men, but with spies. The wise-cracking, Seven Sisters grad heroines invariably trounce foreign operatives and baffle Interpol, in between mixing highballs, fixing flounces, and caring for stray cats.

After that…. A care package was just sent to me by my favorite book whisperer (thanks, Vicki!), so there is an embarrassment of choice.

What have you been reading this week?

A Desperate Fortune by Susanna Kearsley. I highly recommend it. And The Unknown Ajax by Georgette Heyer. I’ve read and re-read so many of her books, but some how missed this one. I’m enjoying it.

Just finished The Splendour Falls. I love Kearsley, and A Desperate Fortune is on my list.

I love the old (1960s) gothics. Mary Stewart and Elsie Lee are favorites, although I don’t care for miss Lee’s historicals. Anne Maybury and Velda Johnston wrote similar gothic romances. I,m starting Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier. It’s a re-read and VERY creepy!

Roses and Rot. It’s a modern take on the Child ballad “Tam Lin.”

Just finished The Girl Who Wrote in Silk by Kelli Estes, a wonderful first novel about an old house filled with secrets and the mysterious embroidered sleeve found in it. Part novel, part history and part mystery, it was a page turner I couldn’t put down. I’m also joining in the rereads of Tracy Grant’s Malcolm and Suzanne Rannoch historical mysteries – great stories with lots of action and wonderful characters.

I’ll have to check that out, Lynne. It does sound good.

Just finished Sarah Jio’s Violets of March. I like her books 🙂

Sting – Sandra Brown – I had a lot of issues with stupidity & consent for this one.

The Underground Railroad Colson Whitehead & Homegoing Yaa Gyasi. Both excellent & deserving of the hype they’ve received. I had serious book hangover.

First Star I See Tonight – not my favorite SEP but still an entertaining read.

I’ve been reading “Angelica” by Arthur Phillips based on the recommendation of Tasha Alexander. So far it’s an interesting haunting that may or may not be related to the titular character’s father’s pent up sexual frustrations.
