After a year of mostly re-reads, I’m making a concerted effort to get back in touch with the wider publishing world.
This week? Liane Moriarty’s Big Little Lies
Right now, I’ve zigzagged back to Robert Galbraith for Book Two of the Cormoran Strike series, The Silkworm
The only down side to discovering all these new-to-me authors? I’m very behind on my regularly scheduled October ghost story reading. Also my regularly scheduled Baking with Pumpkin.
What have you been reading this week?
I really enjoyed At the Water’s Edge.
I read a wonderful older Jodi Picoult, Plain Truth, may be what started the Amish craze, but excellent.
Also enjoyed the SansPareil mystery, by Karen Charlton, a lot like the Sebastian St Cyr stories.
Finished yet another Sherlock Holmes… The Valley of Fear. You can really tell he was sick of writing him by this point. As for this weekend… I got approved for an arc of a new book, I think you’ve heard of it… The Forgotten Room 😉
Finally at the last third of Mansfield Park…it’s less engaging than I first thought it was, but I still like it…I’m determined to get through rereading Austen…and the Brontës after that.
Earlier this week I read Vicious by V.E. Schwab, which I now have to write intelligent questions for a library book club about, but I really just want to obsess and look for fan fiction because it’s begging to be slashed.
I am sending out a SOS for reading recs! I love historical mysteries with a dash or two of romance, and so have read and loved “The Pink Series” by the wonderful Lauren, CS Harris, Teresa Grant, Tasha Alexander, Deanna Raybourn, Kate Morton, Maggie Hope series, etc… but am looking for others now that I am all caught up on these. Any suggestions?

There is a sort of mystery in A memory of Violets, by Hazel Gaynor, one of the best books I have read this year. Late Victorian, very very good.
Charles Todd, a mother/son writing team has two series based during WWI – one features Inspector Ian Rutledge and the other features nurse Bess Crawford. I have only read The Walnut Tree, which was very good.

Have you read Charles Finch (mid Victorian), Rhys Bowen (Molly Murphy; NY Edwardian & Lady Georgian: Britain 1030s), Kerry Greenwood (Melbourne 1920s) or Stephanie Barron (Regency)? I love all of the series you mentioned, so you may enjoy these. They are really good, atmospheric mysteries.

Reading Katharine Ashe’s Again, My Lord.
It’s a fun read.
Right now I am reading Wicked Witch Murder by Leslie Meier and next up will be Rebecca. There are several historical mystery series that are pretty good. Anne Perry’s Inspector Pitt series and her William Monk series (both Victorian era). There is also Anna Lee Huber’s Lady Darby series set victorian Scotland. Charles Finch has the Lennox series set in 1860’s and James Benn has a good WW2 series with the main character Billy Boyle. Then there is Rhy Bowen’s Molly Murphy early 1900’s New York and her 1930’s Lady Georgiana series.
Sorry Joan, it wasn’t until I paged down that I saw you had recommended most of the authors I did. Well, at least Tiffany now has an endorsement of them from both of us.
Lynne H recommend Rhys Bowen to me a few months ago and I will be eternally grateful. I read the 5th Lady Georgiana book, Naughty In Nice, this week and it was absolutely delightful. I love her characters, they are so wonderfully eccentric.
I have just finished the latest Lady Emily book, The Adventuress, and it was fantastic! In my opinion it is her best so far. And strangely enough it is set on the French Riviera, just like Naughty in Nice, only about 40 years earlier and they went to a lot of the same places. As Nice is one of my five favourite places in the world I have had a lovely time reading about it.
Like Suzanne and Joan, I heartily endorse Charles Finch, Rhys Bowen, Stephanie Barron and Anne Perry’s early Inspector Pitt books. This week, however, I’m closing in on the finish of my reread of Ross Poldark, the first in Winston Graham’s Poldark Saga. I had forgotten how wonderful Graham’s writing is and how well he captures Cornwall in the late 1700’s. I figure if PBS is going to continue the series I need to refresh my memory on the series.
The BBC is hoping to make this a long running series, let’s hope it gets picked up here.
Sheila, PBS has already announced that series 2 of Poldark will be back in the spring of 2016. They are filming even as we speak. Lucky us as it was a great production!
