Weekly Reading Round-Up

Hi, all! So sorry to be around here so little recently. I’ve been in the final throes of Pink XII, The Lure of the Moonflower (deadline is March 15– wish me luck!).

When I haven’t been plugging away at Jack’s and Jane’s story, I’ve been dipping into more of Laura Resnick’s Esther Diamond novels, supernatural mysteries with more than a touch of madcap humor. This week’s? Book II, Doppelgangster, featuring gangster dopplegangers, and Book IV, Vamparazzi, in which the heroine, an actress, has been cast in a stage adaptation of Polidori’s The Vampyre (highly recommended for any fans of The Mark of the Midnight Manzanilla or vampire spoofs in general).

What have you been reading this week?

I finished the ARC of Beatriz Williams’ new book, Tiny Little Thing, and it was fantastic. Her books just keep getting better.

Triumph and Treasure by Collette Cameron.
Who Buries the Dead by C.S.Harris, the newest Sebastian St Cyr mystery (so good!)
And a variety of samples of Kindle books; the ones that made the cut and I bought were Love Between the Lines by Kate Rothwell and A Discreet Gentleman of Inquiry by Kris Tualla.

Anything and everything Regency! I devoured the delightful Kat Incorrigible series by Stephanie Burgis and everyone should check it out, it’s middle grade by adorable. Now I’m re-reading some Lauren before going to some Sorcery and Cecelia (can you tell I’m doing two back to back months of Regency books on my blog?)

I read The Day of Atonement by David Liss, which I got through the LibraryThing Early Reviewers program but it took four months after it came out for the publisher to get it here. (I am still happy that I got it before it came out in paperback, when I would have bought it anyway since I love David Liss.) Then I read The Alchemy of Stone by E. Sedia, which was exactly the sort of socially critical steampunk I was looking for. And today I started Skin Game by Jim Butcher.

I was reading the Swept through Time collection of 7 novels by various authors. They were pretty good! Afterwards I read Before I Fall by Jessica Scott. That I wholeheartedly recommend; it broke my heart at times. It is told from 2 points of view: a girl going to college, working 2 jobs, and taking care of her father whom the VA hospital system has failed. And a young man going to college after serving in the army in Iraq and Afghanistan. The author absolutely nailed it; all the problems of PTSD and medications to help. It turns out she and her husband are both in the military, so there you go! On a lighter note I read Alyssa Maxwell’s Murder at Marble House, the second in a series centering on the vast Vanderbilt family. A very enjoyable series! Now I am finally reading Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell after seeing clips of an upcoming series on masterpiece theater.

Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norell for the win! Literally one of my favorite books EVER!

I finished the Grace Burrowes Windham family series with Lady Eve’s Indiscretion – 8 books and 4 novellas -only to find out she has another whole series with a lot of the secondary characters from this one, but that will have to wait.

I’m now reading Julie Klassen’s The Secret of Pembrooke Park and it is wonderful – very spooky and mysterious. Also rereading The Betrayal of the Blood Lily for the reread on Bubblebath Reader.

I read the new Charles Lennox mystery, The Laws of Murder (Charles Finch). I’m defending my dissertation tomorrow (!!) and it was exactly what I needed. Now back to twitching in a corner…
