Weekly Reading Round-Up

It’s been a bit of a blurry week (my toddler has decided that sleep is for other people), so I’m having a rather hard time remembering what I’ve read and if I read. But two books stand out:

— Georgette Heyer’s The Grand Sophy, in which a redoubtable young lady reorganizes her relations. Some of Heyer’s best comic side characters are in this novel, including the poet, Augustus Fawnhope (I did not consciously model Augustus Whittlesby on him, but given the Augustus parallel, I wonder if I might have been subconsciously influenced) and the prim Miss Eugenia Wraxton. Do you know who Sophie reminds me of? Sally Fitzhugh. The two are sisters under the skin.

— Sarah Waters’ The Little Stranger. I’ve just started this based on recommendations here last week, and… wow. Thanks, you guys.

    Two mysteries by Gladys Mitchell, Late and Cold and Heavy as Lead. Interesting premise, built around a society that preserves and protects old buildings.
    Syrie James’ wonderful Jane Austen’s First Love.
    Otherwise Engaged, by Amanda Quick, very glad it is not a paranormal.
    Five Quarters of the Orange, by the same person who wrote Chocolat: very dark, well written, the characters stay with you.
    Also the reread of Masque of the Black Tulip, wonderful!

      Have you read Syries’s The Lost Memoirs of Jane Austen and The Missing Manuscript of jane Austen? They are both really good. Also, Nocturne and Dracula, My Love.

    I read Rhoda Janzen’s Mennonite in A Little Black Dress (first of her memoirs) and liked it.

    I finished Lady Pamela Hicks’ memoir, Daughter of Empire and for the last couple of days, I’ve been getting into the spirit of the season with some Poe short stories and The Monkey’s Paw. Tonight, it’s off to a concert reading of Poe too!

    I was very busy this week, so only got to reading my book for book club which is Cartwheel by Jennifer DuBois. It’s loosely based on the Amanda Knox case and it was a supreme let down.

    Oh my goodness, The Little Stranger is so amazing. Enjoy! I am reading An Inquiry into Love and Death by Simone St. James and terrifying myself out of my wits.

      I loved this book and also The Haunting of Maddy Clare – if you want terrifying!
