Weekly Reading Round-Up

This week, I finally read one of the Owen Archer mysteries by Candace Robb, The Riddle of St. Leonard’s. I loved it, but I’m going to have to go back and start with The Apothecary Rose, since I felt that I was missing out by coming in at the middle.

Right now, I have two treats in store for me: a galley of the upcoming Deanna Raybourn novel, Night of a Thousand Stars, and Kristan Higgins’s latest, Waiting On You (which I picked up at the drugstore under pretext of buying tissues– but both count as cold remedies, right?).

What have you been reading this week?

I have been reading The Apple Orchard by Susan Wiggs. It’s really good and hard to put down. The recipes that she includes ties into the storyline. It is very charming.

I love her books, but I haven’t read that one. I’ll have to add it to the pile!

I’m such a musical nerd. Now I have Night of Thousand Stars from Evita in my head!

I have been reading the first Game of Thrones book. I’m rather late to the party, but I like it so far!
I’m a little excited because Amazon just delivered the new Outlander book to my house today… 4 days early!… so that’s up next.

I have been reading The Sands of Time, a collection of short stories by Barbara Erskine, which includes a conclusion to Whispers in the Sand. Also on my Kindle I am reading a time travel book called Out of Time. All of this to fill my days before Diana Gabaldon’s next Outlander book is released next week.

Lucky you to be discovering Candace Robb. She has also written historical novels about Alice Perrers and the new one coming out will be about Joan of Kent.

Last week and into last weekend I became addicted to Leigh Bardugo’s Grisha series, as I mentioned before. But I should have paced myself, because I have two weeks, two looooong weeks to wait for the final volume. Sigh.

I read “How to be a Good Wife” by Emma Chapman for book club… it was creepy, violent, and badly written. Think unreliable narrator trope of “Wide Sargasso Sea” and make it Scandinavian and even more disturbing.

BUT now I’m in 7th reader heaven, having just got an ARC of “The Mark of the Midnight Manzanilla.” I started yesterday and have already devoured half the book!

I just finished The Blood Promise, Hugo Marston’s latest adventure by Mark Pryor. I really like his books. How Miss Rutherford Got Her Groove Back by Sophie Barnes. That was fun. Reread Away in a Manger: A very Turnip Wedding Night. Deanna Raybourn’ Twelfth Night. Just got two books from the library: Why Kings Confess–the latest Sebastian St Cyr and Three Emperors–the latest Ethan Gage, that rascal!

I have been revisiting Stephanie Barron’s Jane Austen mysteries this spring and just finished the 7th – Jane and the Ghosts of Netley. They are terrific mysteries, well written and very much in character with the real Jane.

And Lauren – do read the rest of the Owen Archer series – they are ever so good. I read them several years ago and loved them.

    • Suzanne on June 7, 2014 at 12:21 am

Lynne, I love them too. And there is good news because after a gap of several years there is a new one coming out in October; Jane And The Twelve Days Of Christmas.

I read Deanna Raybourn’s Twelfth Night, which was delightful. Very clever and witty as usual. I am well into That Summer now and loving it. So beautiful and engrossing. I really should be doing the washing this afternoon but I can’t put it down.

I haven’t been able to get my hand on That Summer yet, so I’m reading the second installment in the Land of Stories trilogy, by Chris Colfer, entitled The Enchantress returns and it’s really good. I’ve fell in love with these books right from the first page. I love how he is using our beloved fairy tales to tell his story! Next in line, Shadow Spell, by Nora Roberts (I have to return it to the library really soon)… Did you know, Lauren, that the settings of the trilogy is a castle in Ireland called Ashford? I can’t help but think of you and Bea and Addie and Clemmie every time I come across the name!!

  13. Ginny on June 7, 2014 at 12:29 pm

Well, I’m reading “The Ashford Affair” — am about twenty pages from the end and enjoying it immensely! Looking forward to reading “That Summer” too, as soon as I can get my hands on it.

Someone recommended Susan Howatch, so I’ve got “Penmarric” waiting in the wings. Also plan to get started on the Phryne Fisher mystery series (have a hunch I spelled that wrong) …

  14. Gina on June 7, 2014 at 6:27 pm

Night of a Thousand Stars sounds wonderful – added it to my wish list already.

I’ve been reading Northanger Abbey and That Summer, and I just finished Whatever You Do, Don’t Run by Peter Allison – a hilarious account of his adventures as a safari guide.

  15. Laura on June 7, 2014 at 7:49 pm

I just finished Barbara Taylor Bradford’s newest book “CAVENDON HALL” …. absolutely LOVED IT!!!! Can’t wait until the sequel comes out…..
