Name That Stoat!
March 12th, 2013

As some of you may know, I’m starting work on Pink XI, Sally Fitzhugh’s book, right around now. Last month, it came to my attention that Sally is in possession of a rather unusual pet. Because, yes, Sally would have to be original.

The pet? Is a stoat.

So far, I have resisted entreaties to name Sally’s pet stoat Pulchritudinous Oblong (long story), but the poor little stoat still needs a name.

Any suggestions?

    Ermingard! (pun on “ermine”)

    • SusanN says:

I like this–reminds me of Ermengarde from A Little Princess. (Do we know if it is a girl stoat or a boy stoat, tho?) :-)

  2. Carole Rae says:

    Mhmmmmm. A name….mmmmm.
    Rawlings
    Austen
    Shakespeare (bahahaha)
    Randell
    Phineas
    Tart
    Apple
    Apple-Tart

Well, thats all I have. :3

  4. Jeannie LUNTZ says:

    Baron Munch?

  5. Hannah says:

Peaches. I don’t know why, it’s the first thing that came to mind.

  6. Christine says:

Burrow, because stoat = weasel, weasel makes me thing of Weasley, and the Weasleys lived in The Burrow. Or Ginny, if it’s a girl.

  7. Diane says:

Sally likes adventure…over-dramatic like the White Mustela? The Black Kit? Or dangerous like the Dowager of Mustelids?

  8. Cassandra says:

    Rapunzel

  9. Jessica says:

Well a male stout is called a Jack and a female is called a Jill.

  10. Molly J says:

    Ferdinand von Wiesel (weasel) OR
    Ferdinand von Hermelin (ermine)

For some reason I just want him to be German :)

  11. kate says:

how about Christie? would work for a boy or a girl.

  12. MelissaW says:

    Snuggles
    Turnip
Reggie (hey, she’s a little sis after all)
    The Purple Gentian (haha)
What’s the name of the girl Sally used to be friends with who tried to kill Arabella in MISTLETOE? Catherine Carruthers?

I was going to suggest Stoat, but I think Sally has a bit more imagination than Henrietta (sorry, Hen).

  13. Julie H says:

I bet Sally would name it after someone just to irritate that person, haha. Maybe Miss Climpson? Or Reggie/Turnip? Or another girl from her school whom she doesn’t like?

  14. Alice says:

Minerva. It just came to me.

  15. Susan says:

    Muriel… or Myrtle

  16. Chartreuse says:

    There’s always Ermintrude.

  17. Gina says:

    Theodore might work…

  18. Sheila says:

    Sterling…maybe an opportnuity for puns.

  19. Jessica S. says:

    Percy. Or Felix.

  20. Dara says:

Hmmmm. Sebastian. Can’t you just picture Vaughn’s reaction? Or old Boney.

  21. Jessie says:

Bacon. Not for the man, but the breakfast food.

  22. Rachel Adrianna says:

Lord Turnip Stoatsenbach… with some back story about how she named it after her brother :)

  23. Lauren R. says:

Sir Elgin or the Lady FitzErmine

  24. I second Sebastian, I thought it before I read Dara’s comment, so agreement equals def. choice :P

  25. HJ says:

Toast – an anagram, and also fun to say (if a bit of a tongue-twister): Toast the stoat. Stoats are brown with white bits – like inexpertly toasted bits of bread done in front of the fire. (I checked, and the word “toast” has been in use since at least 14th century.)

Stoater or stoter – stoter is a slang word which had been in use for at least a hundred years by the early nineteenth century. It meant a great blow. Perhaps not a term which Sally would know; maybe a male relative or friend, fond of boxing, might name him?

Grose’s Classical Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue 1823: “A great blow. Tip him a storer… give him a blow…”

The Universal Etymological English Dictionary, by N. Bailey, London, 1737: “a great Blow. Stoter him, or, Tip him a Stoter; Settle him; give him a swinging Blow.”

  26. LMT says:

    Fitzherbert

  27. Cassandra says:

Sir Nicky Mustache, the defender of ladies fair against the most foul of fowls, the chicken!

  28. Vanessa says:

I like Christine’s idea of the name Ginny because it’s a Potter reference! Now that I’m on that topic, how about Hermione?

    Or Stoatie :P

  29. Jessica C says:

For some reason, Sammy popped into my head. Not very creative, but it seems like a stoat-y type of name. Or Hermione for a girl – close to ermine!

  30. Joanne M. says:

    I don’t know if it’s a girl, but I like Erminia.

  31. leslie says:

I like LMT’s suggestion of Fitzherbert. It makes me laugh, in Bridget Jones her boss was of that name and she called him Fitzpervert.

I also like Chester for a stoat.

  32. Katelin says:

I agree that she would name it after someone she dislikes. Or turnip because let’s face it as a little sister sometimes being passive agressive is just so fun!

  33. Griffin says:

Baldrick – mostly because if I had a stoat, he would absolutely be named Baldrick and we would converse often about turnips and cunning plans… :)

  34. zoey says:

    Fluffleupagus!

  35. Lynne says:

It depends on the stoat’s personality…okay, not so much. Name it after her brother – Turnip is a pretty good name for a pet.

  36. Deanna says:

    Archibald, Winston, Louis?

  37. Debra Callaway says:

    How about one of these:

Masculine: Trevor, Noddy, Scrapper, Snuffy, Paris Parsifal, Oliver, Twitcher, Skipper or Sheffield?
    Feminine:
Tansy, Luna, Persephone, Olivia, Flora, Violet Athena or Ginger?

    Or how about Miss Hopkins?

    Sir Parsifal Chickens-bane?
    Lady Flora Rabbit-catcher?

This is just too much fun.

  38. Catherine says:

I think I would be a little tongue in cheek and call it Parsnip : )
