Weekly Reading Round-Up

Apologies! I’m in the midst of moving, buried beneath boxes, so this isn’t going to be much of a round up this week (unless you count all the books I’ve rounded up into boxes?). I’ll post some pictures of the boxes and boxes later, once the Internet is up and running.

What have you been reading?

Overseas by Beatriz Williams….contemporary romance with a time travel twist. Loved it – thanks so much for the recommendation!

I’ve been loading up on free e-books. I really liked “Spying in High Heels” by Gemma Halliday. The heroine is ditzy and slightly annoying at times but it was a cute, fluffy read. I started “Ms America and the Offing in Oahu” and it’s terrible. I gave up 1/3 of the way through. I’m currently reading “Chasing Mona Lisa” and loving it so far.

My sympathies Lauren, packing is no fun!
I devoured Imperial Scandal!!! I just can’t get enough of the Rannoch/Frasier family!!
I started India Black yesterday by Carol Carr. Only a few chapters in and loving it! It’s a laugh out loud tale of a madam who gets tangled up a scheme after a member of the British War Office keels over while in her brothel!

I am about half way into Mr. Churchill’s Secretary. So far it has been a very enjoyable cozy mystery. I can see quite a few twists looming. The historical elements were very well done.

I was inspired by your recent If You Like post on stories with governesses and am just starting The Mistress of Mellyn by Victoria Holt…looking forward to a good gothic romance!

I finally read Garden Intrigue and wow, was it fantastic. The friendship between Emma and Augustus was just the most wonderful thing ever. I smiled at your book a lot while reading, I probably looked insane.

After that, I started Resurrection, a sci-fi which I have only read 2 chapters of so I don’t really know what’s going on yet. But it seems good so far.

I LOVED Mistress of Mellyn, you are in for a treat!

This week I finally finished Life Skills by Katie Fforde, which I found pretty disappointing. I’d enjoyed the other two titles of hers that I’d read but for me the plot of this one dragged. I was also really bothered by the lack of sustainability of the main character’s feminist attitudes–how against them other characters were and how quickly her beliefs were allowed to fall by the wayside. To say more would veer dangerously into spoiler territory, but I wouldn’t recommend this one.

Now I’m on to The Marriage Plot by Jeffrey Eugenides, which I’m looking forward to.

Good luck with your move, Lauren!

As for me, I read the last two books in the Bridgerton series, It’s in his kiss and On the way to the wedding and I am about to start on Overseas, on your recommandation, Lauren! 🙂

Happy moving! Have you found things you thought were lost, while packing your things?

    Re-reading some 19th Century “literature”:
    “Kim” — Kipling
“The Tragedy of Korosko” — Conan Doyle
    “She” — Rider Haggard
    “King Solomon’s Mines” — Haggard
“People of the Mist” — Haggard

Couldn’t find “The Convent of Orsino” by A Lady on Project Gutenberg; surely literature of this importance would be there by now. 😉

I read the first Aunt Dimity book, which really didn’t strike me at all as a mystery. Now devouring the newest Sookie Stackhouse (which I promised myself was my reward for finals).

The Cove by Ron Rash I just started. Its set in WWI in the Appalachians of NC. Great stoytelling. The monment you open the book you are transported to a different timeand place.

Happens Every Day, by Isabel Gillies. This is a revealing memoir of her first marriage. I liked it and hated it at the same time. Afterwards, I read reader reviews on Amazon, and agreed with both the 5 star AND the 1 star ones !

Finished “The Black Tulip” by Alexandre Dumas. Which was disappointingly not about flowery spies and swashbuckling, HOWEVER, it was great change of pace. Have moved on to Madame Tussaud. I am curious about Churchill’s Secretary — advertising on Facebook was fierce. Lauren, lift with your legs and not your back — or get some hunky guys to do it for you~ 8P
