It’s been a particularly good week for entertaining bits of this and that on the internet. So, for those who haven’t already stumbled across these….
— A lyrical essay on why men should date women who read: “If you want the world and the worlds beyond it, date a girl who reads. Or better yet, date a girl who writes.”
— While we’re on relationships, here are The Top Ten Relationship Words That Aren’t Translatable into English: my favorite is Cafuné, a Brazilian Portuguese word for the act of tenderly running your fingers through someone’s hair.
— For those of us obsessed with the physical form of books, an essay from The Chronicle of Higher Education on the lure of the book: We’re Still in Love With Books.
— And, while we’re talking books, make sure your office door is closed while reading this one: it’s a collection of the rejected titles of famous books. Who would have guessed that The Great Gatsby was almost called The High-Bouncing Lover?
— Finally, moving from books to film, do you love to hate Love, Actually, or do you hate to love Love, Actually? This essay pretty accurately sums up some of my issues with the movie… although between the first lobster and Bill Nighy as an aging rocker, I’ll watch it anyway.
Thank you so much for the “Love Actually” rundown. I had thought for many years to be the only person who thought it was not in fact the “Ultimate Romantic Comedy”, but rather a “Tepid-to-Lukewarm Romantic Comedy.”
Though at the same time I must admit to being in the “love to hate” category. I think it’s Hugh Grant. Get’s me every time. Sigh.
Ha ha I absolutely loathe “Love, Actually,” so it’s good to hear that I’m not alone. Although I don’t love to hate it, I just hate it.

Wow–the Love Actually link sums up my feelings about the movie in ways I could never have adequately verbalized. There are things I love about it, and things I hate. I own it, but still must watch whenever it’s on TV.
I love the feel of books. I also loved getting a real paycheck, opening the envelope, looking it over, signing and depositing it. Direct Deposit may be faster and safer but I miss the seeing and feeling what I earned. I feel the same about real books~ Each one is different in size, shape, scratches, dents, etc. I like turning the pages and carrying it in my hands or seeing it on my bedstand. I enjoy “the search” or “the chase” in a used book store mostly, but even in a chain store there is something to discover or acquire. Electronic Readers may be the future but I’m gonna be the crazy old lady that won’t give up her real books!
