Halloween Reading

My go-to Halloween book is always Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House. Is it a ghost story? Is it a tale of psychological decay? I’m never quite sure, but either way it’s creepy.

This year, I’ve been going untraditional (for me) and reading through E.F. Benson’s ghost stories instead.

Then, of course, there are Halloween movies. I tend to mix those up a bit more. Last year, it was the remake of House on Haunted Hill. This year, I have Vincent Price’s House of Wax in the queue. Practical Magic and Hocus Pocus have also made it into the line-up in the past.

    Halloween traditions around our house:
    Disney’s “Ichabod Crane” and “Young Frankenstein” with Gene Wilder.

    I also love “Hocus Pocus” and “Practical Magic”…I hope to add “The Wizard of Oz” to our line-up someday.

    Having a hard time waiting for the next book in February!! Thank goodness the Pink books are delicious re-reads!!

    For some reason this year I decided on a Scream marathon, they’re just so cheesey. But I do always try to fit in Kenneth Brannagh’s Frankenstien, it’s too funny to not watch! That man wants to run around barechested so much 😛

    Hocus Pocus is pretty spectacular as far as Halloween movies go. I tried watching the televised version of The Woman in Black but it was a little too much for my delicate nerves.

    Is The Woman in Black the same story as the movie that’s coming out starring Daniel Radcliffe? I saw a preview for it. Looks intense.

    Hi Susan, yes it is, though I think they’ll be changing it around a bit (as usually happens with these things). The book remains far superior…lights on all night for sure.

    i read jennifer crusie’s maybe this time- hey it has ghosts! 🙂 and i’m not much for scary, but after re reading barbara micheals, i also went and re read henry james’ turn of the screw for my thriller moment.

    Tim Burton’s “The Nightmare Before Christmas” is one of my favorites, and it truly works for both holidays.

    Watched the original “Village of the Damned” from the 1960’s, with George Sanders. Also, saw “The House of Wax”, that Lauren mentioned, along with another oldie with Boris Karloff, called “Bedlam” and “The Innocents”, based on Henry James’s The Turn of the Screw.

    Love watching the old classic horror films, well any classic films, but there is something fun about the old black and white horror films for Halloween.
