Happy Valentine's Day!

Happy Valentine’s Day, all! As someone pointed out earlier today, this is a holiday tailor-made for the Pink series– pink accessories anyone? I will be donning my traditional pink sweater and drinking my traditional pink mocha in honor of the day.

Looking back, I realized I’ve done more than a few Valentine’s Day interviews and articles over the years, including the most recent at Knit-Purl-Stitch last week. The one I was looking for, however, was this one: a list of favorite fictional declarations of love.

In honor of Valentine’s Day, which are your favorite fictional (or real!) declarations of love? They can be the best of declarations, they can be the worst of declarations….

One person, chosen at random from among those who comment, will receive a Pink Carnation mug filled with chocolate hearts.

(Side note: I’m going to start collecting favorite Pink quotes soon, for a Pink quote page here on the website. So if you have any good “declaration” lines you’d like included in that, bring ’em on!)

Happy Valentine’s Day!

It’s sad that I can’t think of any right now, other than Darcy’s and Wentworth’s, and I wanted to be different (chalk it up to being to early in the day, even at 11 am)… so, well, you didn’t specify that it had to be literary, and the only one I can think of is…

    Leia – “I love you”.
    Han – “I know”.

    — Empire Strikes Back

and whether that is the best or worst, I guess depends on your “certain point of view.” πŸ˜‰

Cheesy as it is, I’ve always loved, “I’m just a girl, standing in front of a boy, asking him to love her,” from “Notting Hill.” Also, Colin Firth’s broken Portuguese declaration from “Love, Actually.” I’m also not embarrassed to say that I really like the movie “Valentine’s Day” and I loved the storyline with Julia Roberts’ character and the scene between Mark Dane and Bradley Cooper at the end.

I’m a sucker for Darcy’s declaration of love to Elizabeth. πŸ™‚

How about my favorite marriage proposal (besides my own, but I won’t bore you with those gory details…)

My favorite fictional marriage proposal is Lionel proposing to Jean on “As Time Goes By.” It’s too long to quote, but it is brilliant!!!

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3VTIReKpIzk

The proposal starts at about 5:26, but the entire clip is worth viewing.

My all time favorite from the Pink series from Mischief of the Mistletoe.

“Turnip clasped and unclasped his hands behind his back. ‘What I’m trying to say is, it’s yours, you know. My heart. If you want it.'”

It’s so disarmingly honest and just so darn adorable, I’ve reread that quote so many times!

I know it’s a movie version, and a remake of all things, but I love Darcy’s final declaration in the 2005 version of Pride and Prejudice.

“I will have to tell you: you have bewitched me, body and soul, and I love, I love, I love you. I never wish to be parted from you from this day on”

    Happy Valentines Day!

I love this scene between Bridget Jones and Mark Darcy, when he finally comes to the realization that he loves her!!!

    Mark Darcy: Bridget!
Bridget: Mark… What are you doing here?
Mark Darcy: I was just wondering if you were available for Bar Mitzvahs and Christenings in addition to Ruby Weddings.
Bridget: I thought you were in America.
Mark Darcy: Well I was… but I realized I had forgotten something here.
    Bridget: Which was…?
Mark Darcy: Well, I realized that I had forgotten to… kiss you goodbye, do you mind?
Bridget: Umm… not really, no. So… does this mean you’re *not* going to America?
    Mark Darcy: No… not.
Bridget: Does this mean you’re staying here?
Mark Darcy: It would seem so…
Mark Darcy: [notices her friends cheering] Friends of yours?
Bridget: Oh, haha… never seen them before in my life.

You’ve Got Mail (the abbreviated version): Joe Fox – “How about some coffee, or you know, drinks, or dinner, or a movie, for as long as we both shall live?’ And the only thing we’d fight about would be which video to rent on a Saturday night… Let me ask you something. How can you not forgive me for this tiny little thing – putting you out of business? Oh, how I wish you would…”

“I cannot make speeches, Emma…If I loved you less, I might be able to talk about it more. But you know what I am. You hear nothing but truth from me. I have blamed you, and lectured you, and you have borne it as no other woman in England would have borne it.”
    β€” Jane Austen (Emma)

  10. Stephanie on February 14, 2011 at 12:18 pm

Emma was my first Jane Austen experience, and Mr. Knightly is still one of my favorite heros. I love that they know each other so well and the declaration doesn’t have to be a literal “I love you”.

“I cannot make speeches, Emma,” he soon resumed, and in a tone of such sincere, decided, intelligible tenderness as was tolerably convincing. “If I loved you less, I might be able to talk about it more. But you know what I am. You hear nothing but truth from me… God knows, I have been a very indifferent lover. But, you understand me. Yes, you see, you understand my feelings-and will return them if you can. At present, I ask only to hear – once to hear your voice.” – Knightly

Also, I completely agree with Christine, Colin Firth’s declaration from “Love Actually” is a great one.

  11. Angie on February 14, 2011 at 12:22 pm

I don’t have the book in front of me, and it would be too long to quote, probably, but Scarlett O’Hara Wilkes Kennedy Butler finally coming to her senses about Rhett at Melanie’s deathbeath and rushing home to Rhett, alas, to no avail as Rhett has finally reached the end of his patience. A reminder that the things and people we take for granted may not always be there.

  12. Lesley on February 14, 2011 at 12:40 pm

Well, since Persuasion is my favorite Austen, I have to give it to Wentworth:

“I can listen no longer in silence. I must speck to you by such means as are within my reach. You pierce my soul. I am half agony, half hope. Tell me not that I am too late, that such precious feelings are gone forever. I offer myself to you again with a heart even more your own, than when you almost broke it eight years and a half ago. Dare not say that man forgets sooner than woman, that his love has an earlier death. I have loved none but you.”

Of course for film, I completely agree with Colin Firth in Love Actually. But also, Mark’s poster board confession to Juliet’s character is so sweet too.

I love noahs proposal to allie in the note book

Would you stay with me ?
Stay with you look at us we are already fighting
Well that’s what we do we fight you tell me when I’m being an arrogant son of a bitch and I’ll tell you when you’re being a pain in the ass which you are 90% of the time

Simple: Anne Shirley & Gilbert Blythe from the “Anne of Green Gables” series.

In the third installment, “Anne of the Island”, Anne finally realizes what patient Gilbert has known all along and they fall quietly into a future filled with dreams and “scope for imagination”. The idea that love blooms when planted in a true friendship…that has always stuck with me. And I’ll readily admit that I have married my best friend (like Anne, it took me a long time to realize who/what was patienly waiting for me) and we couldn’t be happier.

    Happy Valentine’s Day!

  15. Morgan on February 14, 2011 at 12:44 pm

I agree with Elizabeth – Turnip’s charmingly simple and sweet declaration is one of my favorites!

  16. Angie on February 14, 2011 at 12:58 pm

And as far as actual marriage proposals, Rhett’s actual proposal to the newly (re)widowed Scarlett is priceless: After all, I can’t go all my life waiting to catch you between husbands.

  17. Lauren T on February 14, 2011 at 1:03 pm

Since I just watched Pride and Prejudice for the bazillionth time. . . it is a tie between Darcy’s two declarations. While the one at the end of the movie makes your toes curl, I can’t help feeling for him a little, despite his utter lack of finess, during the first.

“Miss Elizabeth. I have struggled in vain and I can bear it no longer. These past months have been a torment. I came to Rosings with the single object of seeing you… I had to see you. I have fought against my better judgment, my family’s expectations, the inferiority of your birth by rank and circumstance. All these things I am willing to put aside and ask you to end my agony. I love you. Most ardently. Please do me the honor of accepting my hand. “

  18. Tracie on February 14, 2011 at 1:06 pm

One of my favorite romantic films of all time is A Room With a View. That kiss in the barley field? SWOON George Emerson is my kind of passionate, impulsive romantic hero. I love this bit when he tries one more time to get Lucy to dump her fiance and admit her love for him:

George: He’s the sort who can’t know anyone intimately, least of all a woman. He doesn’t know what a woman is. He wants you for a possession, something to look at, like a painting or an ivory box. Something to own and to display. He doesn’t want you to be real, and to think and to live. He doesn’t love you. But I love you. I want you to have your own thoughts and ideas and feelings, even when I hold you in my arms. It’s our last chance…

  19. Devon H on February 14, 2011 at 1:14 pm

Well, I’ll be redundant and say Pride and Prejudice πŸ™‚ Although, I do love the final proposal, it’s the initial pompous one where Darcy lays his cards on the table that makes me squeal because I picture Lizzie’s jaw hardening and eyebrow inching upward as the words spout, unbidden, in a vehement and passionate manner:

β€œIn vain I have struggled. It will not do. My feelings will not be repressed. You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you.”

  20. Sarah on February 14, 2011 at 1:25 pm

Outside of Jane Austen and the Pink books (since that’s too easy), my current favorite declaration of love is Thornton to Margaret in the miniseries of North and South (I’m in the middle of the book, so i don’t know how it compares yet)

Margaret Hale: It offends me that you should speak to me as if it were your… duty to rescue my reputation!
John Thornton: I spoke to you about my feelings because I love you; I had no thought for your reputation!
Margaret Hale: You think that because you are rich, and my father is in… reduced circumstances, that you can have me for your possession! I suppose I should expect no less from someone in trade!
John Thornton: I don’t want to possess you! I wish to marry you because I love you!

The last scene is amazing too, of course, but I love watching their facial expressions as he declares himself that first time

  21. Susan on February 14, 2011 at 1:31 pm

Wow. Ditto on several of these. ALL of the Colin Firths, naturally.

Another of my favorites is by Leo Hathaway from Married by Morning by Lisa Kleypas.
“You have my heart, and unfortunately for you the rest of me comes with it. You don’t have to be mine, just let me be yours.”

And I smile when I read Cam & Amelia.
“You don’t mind that our children will be half Rom?”
“As long as you don’t mind that they’re half Hathaway.”

  22. Larissa on February 14, 2011 at 1:44 pm

One of my favourites comes from an older and relatively little-known novel: “Miss Buncle’s Book”, by D.E. Stevenson. The Miss Buncle in question writes semi-autobiographically, and is stumped for an ending for her newest book, and has talked to her publisher, Mr. Abbott, about her difficulty. Mr. Abbott sends her an outline of an idea…

“Mr. Abbott reflected, as he procured his receipt at the Post Office that this was – perhaps – a unique way of proposing to a lady. He hoped Miss Buncle would take it in the right spirit…It was all to go into the book, of course, that was the whole idea: – Elizabeth Wade’s confession to her publisher of having got stuck with her new novel: Mr. Nun’s offer to read it, and his suggestion for the end, coupled with a proposal of marriage to the fair author…no better ending could be possible.”

  23. Nikki on February 14, 2011 at 2:07 pm

I have to go with Hans Solo and Leia.
“I love you.” “I know.” So arrogant. I love that in a fictional man!

  24. Megan on February 14, 2011 at 2:18 pm

    From The Princess Bride movie…

    Westley: As you wish.
Grandpa: [voiceover] That day, she was amazed to discover that when he was saying “As you wish”, what he meant was, “I love you.” And even more amazing was the day she realized she truly loved him back.

Best love story, action movie, comedy EVER!

  25. Heather Bond on February 14, 2011 at 2:27 pm

My favorite is when Colin proposes to Eloise.

    oops. i guess that hasn’t happened…yet???

  26. Abigail on February 14, 2011 at 2:28 pm

Ooo, these are all so lovely and definitely favorites of mine as well. But let me grab my copy of Jane Eyre…
“I sometimes have a queer feeling with regard to you–especially when you are near me, as now: it is as if I had a string somewhere under my left ribs, tightly and inextricably knotted to a similar string situated in the corresponding quarter of your little frame. And if that boisterous channel, and two hundred miles or so of land come broad between us, I am afraid that cord of communion will be snapt; and then I’ve a nervous notion I should take to bleeding inwardly.”
Love that. Always have, always will. πŸ™‚

  27. Emily on February 14, 2011 at 3:02 pm

This is more of love for a friend, but I have to go with the classic from Steele Magnolia’s

Claree: Ouiser, You know I love you more than my luggage!

  28. Kristen A. on February 14, 2011 at 4:28 pm

From the stage, Cyrano de Bergerac, although rather backward, “No, no my own dear love I love you not!” when Roxanne is on to him. (Although of course I love the balcony scene as well.)

From the page, Rochester’s proposal to Jane Eyre.

And from the screen, When Harry Met Sally: “I love that you get cold when it’s 71 degrees out. I love that it takes you an hour and a half to order a sandwich. I love that you get a little crinkle above your nose when you’re looking at me like I’m nuts. I love that after I spend the day with you, I can still smell your perfume on my clothes. And I love that you are the last person I want to talk to before I go to sleep at night. And it’s not because I’m lonely, and it’s not because it’s New Year’s Eve. I came here tonight because when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.”

  29. Claire on February 14, 2011 at 4:30 pm

I would say it is a tie between Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth and Mr. Knightly and Emma. “If I loved you less, I might be able to talk about it more.” Makes me weak in the knees!

  30. Amanda on February 14, 2011 at 4:54 pm

I have to go with the proposal from THE PRINCESS BRIDE book. It’s so one of my favorites.

After Westley slams the door in her face, of course, he then tells her…

“Don’t you understand anything that’s going on?”

    Buttercup shook her head.

Westley shook his too. “You never have been the brightest, I guess.”

“Do you love me, Westley? Is that it?”

He couldn’t believe it. “Do I love you? My God, if your love were a grain of sand, mine would be a universe of beaches. If your love were–”

“I don’t understand the first one yet,” Butter cup interrupted. She was starting to get very excited now. “Let me get this straight. Are you saying my love is the size of a grain of sand and yours is this other thing? Images just confuse me so–is this universal business of yours bigger than my sand? Help me, Westley. I have the feeling we’re on the verge of something just terribly important.”

“I have stayed these years in my hovel because of you. I have taught myself languages because of you. I have made my body strong because I thought you might be pleased by a strong body. I have lived my life with only the prayer that some sudden dawn you might glance in my direction. I have not known a moment in years when the sight of you did not send my heart careening against my rib cage. I have not known a night when your visage did not accompany me to sleep. There has not been a morning when you did not flutter behind my waking eyelids…is any of this getting through to you, Buttercup, or do you want me to go on for awhile?”

    “Never stop.”

  31. Abby on February 14, 2011 at 5:20 pm

My favorite is Joe to Betsy in Betsy’s Wedding by Maud Hart Lovelace:

“‘Betsy,’ he said at last, ‘I love you. I love you from that cloudy dark hair down to your slender feet. I love your eyes, and your soft hands, and your sweet voice, and the way your laugh chimes out. Everything about you is enchanting to me. But Betsy, it’s more than that.’

He seemed to be thinking out loud.

‘I can always talk to you,’ he said. ‘I can make plans or puzzle out ideas, or build castles in the air. I don’t need to think what I’m saying or guard my words. You understand my high moods and my low ones. You understand me, I guess. I want to be married to you and have you around all the time . . . if we were married and I was coming home to you tonight, I wouldn’t care if we just had bread and milk . . . ‘

‘Betsy, you fit into my life as perfectly as a rose fits its stem. You and I match like the pieces of a broken coin.’ After a long pause, he said, ‘Love me always, Betsy! I have given my whole heart to you.'”

  32. Cho on February 14, 2011 at 5:28 pm

    Darcy’s delclarations.

    Leia: β€œI love you.”
    Han: β€œI know.”

Anything Colin Firth says as a proposal.

    Gibert and Anne.

And oooh, what’s that about pink mocha?! That sounds delicious!

  33. Cho on February 14, 2011 at 5:30 pm

    *declarations

Also, any Jane Austen proposals are good.

  34. Chartreuse on February 14, 2011 at 5:36 pm

It’s nearly tied with _Pride and Prejudice- and the letter in _Persuasion_, but my favorite is from _Gaudy Night_ — too long to quote the whole thing, but it starts:

“There’s something about this place,” said Peter presently, “that alters one’s values.” He paused, and added a little abruptly: “I have said a good deal to you one way and another lately; but you may have noticed that since we came to Oxford I have not asked you to marry me.”

    And it ends:

    “Placetne, magistra?”
    “Placet.”

Don’t know that I want to read Colin’s proposal to Eloise just yet. Would rather read quite a few more Pink novels, first. How about a proposal to Miss Gwen from Mr Whoever, or Sir Someone Whoever, or Lord Whatnot — surely not the Duke of Wherever?

  35. Carole on February 14, 2011 at 6:01 pm

Thanks a hard one…umm…so many of them to pick from. I would have to say Cathy from Wuthering Heights. Its not really to Heathcliff, but he’s being a creeper and eavesdropping:
Cathy: my love for Heathcliff resembles the eternal rocks beneath – a source of little visible delight, but necessary. Nelly, I am Heathcliff – he’s always, always in my mind – not as a pleasure, any more then I am always a pleasure to myself – but, as my own being.

  36. Carole on February 14, 2011 at 6:02 pm

Well, he kinda skipped out on THAT part, but it is a declaration of love. lol I wish he had stuck around for that little tid bit.

  37. Katie on February 14, 2011 at 6:20 pm

While, I have always been a fan of the Princess Bride, thank you Megan, My favorite is still Henrietta and Miles.
“I don’t care how you said it as long as you don’t take it back.”
    and
    “I don’t want better, I want you”

You can’t get better than that.

  38. Anna Kozlowski on February 14, 2011 at 7:30 pm

I have to say that I’m a sucker for the cheesyness of Darcy’s second proclimation of love to Elizabeth in the Kira Knightley Pride and Prejudice where he says:

“If, however, your feelings have changed, I will have to tell you: you have bewitched me, body and soul, and I love, I love, I love you. I never wish to be parted from you from this day on.”

Just that bit where he sort of stutters “I love you”. It’s adorable. Sigh.

  39. Shenandoah Strojek on February 14, 2011 at 7:44 pm

Best declaration of love for me if from Little Women: when Prof. Bhaer says to Jo “‘Ah! Thou gifest me such hope and couragE, and I had nothing to gif back but a full heart and these empty hands” Jo then puts her hands in his and says “‘Not empty now.'” Absolutely the best love scene in literature!

  40. Laura on February 14, 2011 at 7:58 pm

When Harry Met Sally which someone already posted and from the second Bridget Jones movie: “I love you, I always have and I always will” (to a room full of lawyers) because sometimes you just need to hear it.

  41. Bridget on February 14, 2011 at 8:06 pm

These are all wonderful! I have to agree with Darcy, Persuasion, and Gone With the Wind. I also love Little Women, but I was going to say when Laurie asks Jo….”I’ve loved you since the first moment I laid eyes on you. What would be more reasonable than to marry you.”

My favorite pink love is Henrietta and Miles and my favorite is about 2 pages long when Heniretta realizes that it’s “always been Miles” and then tries to convince herself that her love would have trumpets and fanfares, but comes to the conclusion that Miles is the one.

  42. Sarah on February 14, 2011 at 8:23 pm

My absolute favorite is Captain Wentworth’s letter to Anne, although all of Jane Austen’s proposals are swoon-worthy.

-M. Paul’s proposal to Lucy in Villette because its such a sweet, cinderella-like moment for her after going through so much hardship.

“Lucy, take my love. One day, share my life. Be my dearest, first on earth.”

-Sophie and Howl from Howl’s Moving Castle:

“I think we ought to live happily ever after,” and she thought he meant it. Sophie knew that living happily ever after with Howl would be a good deal more hair-raising than any storybook made it sound, though she was determined to try. “It should be hair-raising,” added Howl.
“And you’ll exploit me,” Sophie said.
“And then you’ll cut up all my suits to teach me.”

My vote for worst declaration goes to Mr. Collins for his proposal to Elizabeth. πŸ™‚

    OOOO! A lot of my favorite couples are here: Austen set; Betsy Ray and Joe Willard (love Lovelace’s Betsy series);
    Hen and Miles; and Anne and Gilbert;
love all of Montgomery couples; Emily and Teddy, Perry and Ilse, Pat and Jingle, Rilla and Ken.
not sure what my favorite love declaration is.
    Happy Valentine’s Day!!

  45. Rachel on February 14, 2011 at 9:33 pm

Umm … I’m about to place myself as a “child of the 80s” here … but how has no one mentioned …

“Nobody puts Baby in a corner.”

Ahh … I can watch that 100 times a day and never get sick of it …

As for literary proposals/declarations, I’m a sucker for those like Hen and Miles and Anne and Gilbert. My husband and I were dear friends for so long that our love just grew out of that and before our (veiled) eyes.

And I’m totally with Cho – pink mocha sounds awesome!

  46. Christie Martin on February 14, 2011 at 9:40 pm

  47. carolyn on February 14, 2011 at 9:58 pm

My two favorites have to come from Harry Potter, even though neither is really a decleration, per se:

    From book 7:
There was a clatter as the basilisk fangs cascaded out of Hermione’s arms. Running at run, she flung them around his neck and kissed him full on teh mouth. Ron threw away the fangs and broomstick he was holding and resonded with such enthusiasm that he lifted Hermione off her feet.
“Is this the moment?” Harry asked weakly, and when nothing happened except that Ron and Hermione gripped each other still more firmly and swayed on the spot, he raised his voice. “OI@ THere’s a war going on here!”
Ron and Hermione broke apart, their arms still aroudn each other.
“I know, mate,” said Ron, who looked as though he had recently been hit on teh back of the head with a Bludger, “so it’s now, or never, isn’t it?”

    From book 6:
Harry looked around; there was Ginny running toward him; she had a hard, blazing look in her face as she threw her arms around him. And without thinking, without planning it, without worrying about the fact that fifty people were watching, Harry kissed her.

  48. Jessica C on February 14, 2011 at 10:00 pm

My two favourite declarations of love come from the divine Miss Austen. Mr Collin’s ridiculous proposal of marriage to Elizabeth makes me roll on the floor with laughter every time I read it. He and Mr Darcy could write a book on what NOT to do when offering for a lady’s hand!

Captain Wentworth’s letter to Anne has to be my all-time most-romantic declaration of love. ‘You pierce my soul’… *swoon*

  49. Elizabeth on February 14, 2011 at 10:01 pm

I know I already added one, but I just watched When Harry Met Sally for the first time, so I had to post it.

“I love that you get cold when it’s 71 degrees out. I love that it takes you an hour and 1/2 to order a sandwich. I love that you get a little crinkle above your nose when you’re looking at me like I’m nuts. I love that after I spend the day with you, I can still smell your perfume on my clothes. And I love that you are the last person I want to talk to before I go 2 sleep at night. And it’s not because I’m lonely, and it’s not because it’s New Year’s Eve. I came here tonight because when you realize you want 2 spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.”

Other than the obvious declaration of love made to Elizabeth by Darcy in P&P, my favorite would have to be the ending of BBC’s North and South. There is such a dynamic between Thornton (swoon) and Margaret, much like Darcy and Elizabeth, that makes the ending all the better. I love the proposal scene! The scene, when he is wanting her to “look back” as she is leaving the carriage is very intense.

But the ending of the movie is my ultimate favorite scene. Words aren’t really spoken, it isn’t rich with dialogue, but the build up of emotion that progresses during the movie makes the ending scene so much richer. They both come to the realization of their love and finally concede. <3

I love the line from the movie GIGI—I would rather be miserable with you than without you.

I love the one from Colin Firth’s character in Love, Actually, to his Portuguese love.

“Beautiful Aurelia, I’ve come here with a view of asking you to marriage me. I know I seems an insane person – because I hardly knows you – but sometimes things are so transparency, they don’t need evidential proof. And I will inhabit here, or you can inhabit with me in England. “

As said before: Darcy’s declaration to Elizabeth. And just love the proposal in the movie. Amazing!

And more recently, Katrakis’s Last mistress which I just finished yesterday:

β€œI cannot pretend I did not deceive you, because I did. I do not deserve you, Tristanne, but…” His eyes when they met hers were so dark. Tortured. His hands reached out, but did not touch her. β€œPlease believe me,” he whispered. β€œI cannot let you go.”

I can’t think of any quotes at the moment because I’m too intrigued by this pink mocha you spoke of. What is it? How is it pink? And where does one find it? This inquiring mind wants to know. πŸ™‚

It’s bittersweet, but I’ve always been fond of Scarlett’s declaration to Rhett at the end of Gone With the Wind. She’s finally willing to let go of the stubborn pride that’s caused her to throw years away on Ashley Wilkes, and to begin to be honest with herself. I confess that I hate Rhett’s reception of her pleas…but after all, when “tomorrow is another day,” I feel I can let myself hope that they’ll reconcile. πŸ™‚

One of my fave scenes is from East Lynne by Ellen Wood.

Carlyle, the main character, is at the deathbed of his wife who had ran away from him to be with a rake many many years go. She asks him if he had ever loved her. Carlyle said something to the effect of, “I nearly died when you left…”

It’s not exactly your typical “love declaration” but that scene tugged at my heart.

I read this book 8 yrs ago and Carlyle is the first male character that I was totally in love with. Of course, I fell in love w/ many many male characters after that,…such as Lord Vaughn πŸ™‚

    So many good ones…
Athought, I am rather fond of The movie Stardust based on Neil Giaman’s book, especially when Evain is telling Tristen that she understands what love is while he just so happens to be a mouse and she dosen’t believe he can understand her.
I love it every time I whatch that movie!

Well, not the proposal as the wedding, but I will be severly put out if my future husband doesn’t do the ring-thing that Percy Blakney does in the Anthony Andrews Scarlet Pimpernel!

As for literature: probably Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine! That’s stayed one of my favorites for a really good reason!

So many of my favourites have already been mentioned, Anne and Gilbert, Darcy, Lauren’s, Emma, Leia and Han…

But my absolute favourite is from a book titled The Painted Duchess by Anne Bruck.

“My dearest, sweetest, my love,” he said. “My very true love.”

all my favs are already on here! well, i also really like this one from Serenity (the movie sequel to the show Firefly). i just find it hilarious (they’re facing off in a last stand against their enemies and believe they are going to die):

Dr. Simon Tam: In all that time on the ship… I’ve always regretted… not being with you.

Kaylee Frye: With me? You mean to say… as in sex?

Dr. Simon Tam: I mean to say.

Kaylee Frye: To Hell with this. I’m gonna live!

I have no idea how we started this, but my favorite is what my daugther always answers when I tell her I Love Her.

    “I love you more.”

It goes downhill from there to the typical “No I love you more.”

“I love you more plus 1”

so on and so forth until infinity.

Everyone has used books and movies, but my declaration is real life. My husband told our 16 year old son, “You will not disrespect my wife, she was my wife before she was your mother, and she
will be with me long after you grow up and go out on your own.”

I have two from Jerry Maguire: “You had me at hello.” and “You complete me.” What more could you ask for?
