The Best of All Possible Conferences

And it’s free! The Poisoned Pen, a bookstore, press, and all around fabulous institution, is having its annual conference June 24th-26th at the Arizona Biltmore Resort and Spa.

There are many good reasons to attend the Poisoned Pen Conference:

– Some of my absolute favorite authors, including Diana Gabaldon, Sharon Kay Penman, and P.F. Chisholm;

– A late night reading and pajama party (we authors will be reading some of the, ahem, steamier bits of our manuscripts);

– A raffle for an $100 gift Poisoned Pen gift certificate;

– An obscenely good rate at the Biltmore for those who choose to stay at the hotel;

– Plus, have I mentioned that the conference is completely free? You can attend any of the events and programs entirely gratis, with the one exception of–

– A Georgette Heyer Tea!! Yes, folks, the grand finale of the conference is a tea party dedicated to the great Georgette Heyer, with little tea sandwiches, discussions of her life and works, and a “pick your favorite Heyer line” contest. This is the only part of the conference for which there is a charge ($25/person). You can attend the rest of the conference without attending the tea, and vice versa.

You can find more info on the Poisoned Pen site here. See you in Arizona….

  2. Oooooooh! A Georgette Heyer tea! How fabulous! (… pity I’m in California …) I have read most of her books (there are over 50), including 11 of her 12 mysteries (which are great mysteries & huge fun, too). The mysteries are harder to find than the romances; though, thanks to Sourcebooks, a large chunk of her work (romance, mystery, & general fiction) is currently in print in the USA. If you want a great mystery in the grand Georgette Heyer tradtion, try “No Wind of Blame” or “the Unfinished Clue” – and then go & read the rest of them, too.

    PS – I would love to know which Heyer lines get the most votes.

  3. … and after all that verbage, I forgot the other thing! Poisoned Pen Press publishes Kerry Greenwood’s Phryne Fisher books – which are pretty darn good. (Picture The Saint & James Bond mixed together and turned into a beautiful woman & poured into an Erte gown in 1928 Melbourne, Australia.) These books are almost never in brick-and-morter stores, but I can’t figure out why (it can’t be just because she’s Australian). For those who can make it to the conference, if Poisoned Pen has a table with books, do yourself the biggest favor since you picked up your first “Pink” book, and look for Kerry Greenwood. (I’m a one-woman, underground, more-Phryne-Fisher-in-the-USA movement, can you tell?)
