Title That Book: Round Two

Now that all the title suggestions are in, here’s the big question: which do you think most screams Pink VII?

Voting is now open for the second round of “Title that Book!” With so many great ideas (you can find them all here), I could use all the assistance I can get in weeding them down to a few front-runners. Between now and Friday, March 26th, you can help me out by listing your three favorites in order of preference here, in the comments section of this post.

The contributors of the three top picks, regardless of whether or not those titles are actually used, will receive advance copies of Pink VII. The contributor(s) of the actual title will receive an advance copy of Pink VII and a credit in the acknowledgments.

Thanks so much to everyone for your help with the annual title conundrum!

  66. It is SO difficult to narrow these down to three! I feel like I just have to put my favorites down here even though there’s way more than three. Sorry this is so obnoxiously long! The parentheses indicate that no one actually submitted that exact combination of words, so I swapped them around a little. (I missed the chance to submit my own, so I guess that explains why this comment really belongs one the round one page!)

    1. The Return (Ruse) of the White Iris
    2. The (Guise) of the Silver Iris

    3.
The Illusion (Guise) of the Silver Lilac

    4. The (Façade) of the Fleur-de-Lis

    5. The (Bloom) of the Belle Fleur

    6. The (Lies) of the English Lavender
    7. The Ruse (Guise) of the Silver Thistle

    8. The Shadow (Pretense) of the Silver Pearl
    9. The Intrigue of the English Ivy

    10. Renascence (Renaissance, Ruse, Reawakening, Shade, Revival) of the White Lily (Lilac, Willow)

As good as all the rose titles sound, I don’t think they should be used. There is a book of similar genre by Susan Carroll called The Silver Rose and there are books by Jennifer Donnelly titled The Tea Rose, The Winter Rose, and The Wild Rose. And these are just a few that came to my mind – who knows how many others there might be! Also, the rose is a similar flower to the carnation.
So I guess I should actually pick three. I really like the Renascence of the White Lily, but when I first saw the word renascence it took me a while to realize what it meant, and I consider myself to have a pretty good vocabulary. So I think it should be changed to Renaissance, which more people will recognize and which is also a French word! And also, lily was just used, so maybe willow would work instead? I was really surprised that no one suggested a title using the willow. Here they are:

    1. The Renaissance of the White Willow
    2. The Shadow of the Silver Pearl
    3. The Ruse of the White Iris

by Katherine on March 24th, 2010 at 3:23 am

  67. whoa what’s with the weird punctuation?

by Katherine on March 24th, 2010 at 3:25 am

  68. Totally agree with Katherine on the rose titles. There have been good suggestions, but there’s already Crimson Rose, and there are so many books with a Rose in the title.
(The Jennifer Donnelly books are amazing, by the way.)

by Susan on March 24th, 2010 at 9:30 am

  69. I liked #117. I think white gingers suit Laura. And I have a feeling that everything that’s going to happen is going to be a big facade.

by Margarite on March 24th, 2010 at 11:26 am

  70. I agree anything with Rose, Lilly, Carnation, Tulip, Moon flower (Alex’s brother was dubbed that by the girls) or Moon,

ANY of those should be removed from the list of possibilities, also any flower which when people look they go huh? wisteria (desperate House wives)

Nightshade is an interesting choice but not really a plant known for its flowers.
Thistle is a prairie plant from what i know does not grow in France or England. (could be very wrong there but i live in Oregon and it grows in the dry and seasonal central Oregon)

Also i have a qualm about the Fleur De Lis, it is lily translated but if its done right it should be OK. it could be more in reference to the symbol rather than the flower?

Just my two thoughts.. well maybe a few more than two. but important things. we don’t want it to sound like one of the other titles, eliminate a future title or sound like another book. VERY important.

by Stephanie Ball on March 24th, 2010 at 2:29 pm

  71. AGREED with Stephanie!
can we stick to flowers people will know are flowers here?

Because I know we all know these crazy flowers from looking them up for part one of the contest but the average book buyer does not. And thistle sounds REALLY unromantic!

Out of the COMMON flowers I like Iris and Lilac But the best I think is the Magnolia. Since everyone like the Pale one I’ll go with that. Pale Magnolia.

by Jess on March 24th, 2010 at 5:01 pm

  72. These 3 are my favorites:
The Guise Beneath the Aquamarine Brooch
The Illusion of the Silver Lilac
The Shadow of the Silver Opal
or any combination of the words guise, illusion, shadow, aquamarine, and silver with some flower/jewel

by Rebecca on March 24th, 2010 at 5:55 pm

by Julie H. on March 25th, 2010 at 2:59 pm

  86. Top three choices are:

    (#117)
    (#157)
    (#123)

It’s really hard choosing, but I think these are what closely fits to what I’ve read.

by Jeo on March 25th, 2010 at 5:58 pm

  87. Wow that was a lot of entries. My three are #123 The Ruse of the Grey Iris, #117 The Facade of the White Ginger and #31 The Illusions of the Ivory Magnolia.

by Scarlet on March 25th, 2010 at 6:06 pm

  88. I am going to vote for mine The Ordeal of the Clandestine Nightshade.

I picked nightshade as the flower because in the meaning of flowers it means truth.
clandestine truth would be like a spy.

by Liz on March 25th, 2010 at 6:21 pm

  89. Still like the forget-me knot….
My other two choices would be:
    The Infiltration of the Ivy
    and
    Enchantment of the Silver Thorn

by Linda D on March 25th, 2010 at 7:43 pm

  90. I know we aren’t supposed to be suggesting new titles, but the above made me think–has anyone suggested

    The Facade of the Foxglove

Fwiw, I love Pale Magnolia, but it makes my mind go right to the South in the states.

by Tracy Grant on March 25th, 2010 at 8:05 pm

  91. I don’t really have preferences to the beginning but for flowers i like

    Pale Magnolia
    Moon Orchid
    Lilac (any color)

by Emma on March 25th, 2010 at 9:23 pm

  92. Here are my top 3:

    45. The Charade of the Calla Lily
    72. The Escape of the English Rose
    223. The Secrets of the French Lilac

    or:
The Amour of the English Primrose
    The Entanglement of the Fleur-de-Lis

Can’t wait to read the entire book!

by Becky on March 25th, 2010 at 11:06 pm

  93. Oooh everyone seems to have forgottent lavender I like the Persuasion of the French Lavender

    or Nightshade

    or Pale Magnolia

    or Moon Orchid

    or Calla Lily

by Hetal on March 25th, 2010 at 11:59 pm

  94. #157 The Ruse of the Silver Thistle (ok- because it resembles my entry)
#80 The Intrigue of the White Violet

by Liza Lester on March 26th, 2010 at 3:59 am

  95. Pale Magnolia sounds pretty, but like Tracy Grant says, it sounds too Southern American to me to fit a French/English Regency governess. It also makes me think of Steel Magnolias…

by Jessica C on March 26th, 2010 at 4:48 am

  96. My vote – Ordeal of the Clandestine Nightshade

by Gail on March 26th, 2010 at 11:44 am

  97. I definitely vote for The Ordeal of the Clandestine Nightshade!

by Albert Fowler on March 26th, 2010 at 12:17 pm

  98. I dont know why pale magnolia makes you think of the south…I really like it. Its simple but elegent. It fit a governess much more than nightshade for sure!
    Everyone should vote for the
    Pale Magnolia

P.S. Magnolias were named after a FRENCH man.

by Georgine on March 26th, 2010 at 1:54 pm

  99. A little off-topic:

Someone mentioned (in the middle of suggesting names for Pink VII) that they had discovered that Laura Grey was introduced in Black Tulip (at the spy school). Well, she has also been mentioned in “Ivy and Intrigue: A Very Selwick Christmas”. (I was re-reading it just for the heck of it.) Near the end of Chapter 6, Jane asks Amy if she “might borrow your Miss Grey”, and if she is ready for an assignment, because she needs a little help in Paris. Imagine my surprise! Has Miss Grey been waiting her turn all that time?

by Yvette on March 26th, 2010 at 3:39 pm

  100. I like # 162
The Folly of the Silver Camellia

by Tom on March 26th, 2010 at 7:22 pm

  101. I like #191 Pale Magnolia and #201 The Shadow of the Silver Moonstone.

by Edgar on March 26th, 2010 at 9:02 pm

  102. My only worry about Shadows and Moons is M.M. Kaye’s “Shadow of the Moon”—I’m a fan of her work.

I’m having trouble with this: none of these really grabbed me. I guess it’s because we only read the 1st chapter, so we can only make assumptions about the entire story and the two main characters to whom we were introduced. I figured the decision would belong to you and your publisher, who know the whole story.

Regardless, I’ll throw in a vote for “The Guise of the Fleur de Lys.”

by Abigail on March 26th, 2010 at 10:24 pm

  103. I vote for
The Infiltration of the Ivy (#33) only I think it should be English Ivy (as in #112, 122, 139 & 203)

by Carol on March 26th, 2010 at 11:06 pm

  104. I dont think anything with shadows or moons will work either its too close to other works and too close to “night jasmine” too.
I love Pale Magnolia as a suggestion
also Nightshade and Fleur de lys.

by Jen on March 26th, 2010 at 11:32 pm

  105. Agreed no moon or shadow. also no lily or rose>

fleur de lis is the best i have found. Or maybe iris, lavender, lilac. those are the best but it seems like there kind of lily like. all L”s

Magnolia is ok but it not that fitting. Heather maybe, i do like lavender.
