Mini-Contest #5– and Turnip Book Excerpt!

Only three days left until BLOOD LILY!!!!!

I found it incredibly amusing that the first answer to yesterday’s contest concerned a conjunction of Lord Vaughn and Turnip Fitzhugh, while the second involved Turnip and the Dowager Duchess of Dovedale. Because, in fact, both of those occur in Turnip’s book, The Mischief of the Mistletoe (coming out in October 2010!).

So I’m taking votes. You can have your choice of excerpt from The Mischief of the Mistletoe….

Which would you rather see: the scene with Turnip and Vaughn, or the scene with Turnip and the Dowager?

I’ll tally up the votes and post the winning excerpt from The Mischief of the Mistletoe here on the News page tomorrow.

One person will be selected at random from among all the comments to receive a copy of the super-snazzy British edition of The Masque of the Black Tulip, the book in which Turnip first makes an appearance.

  1. I think Turnip and the Dowager would be really interesting :) I love Dowager Duchesses in books - they’re always so blunt and don’t care what people think. I told my husband that I wanted to be like that when I get older (maybe not so mean but really blunt, haha).

  2. Ooooh, I would love to read the excerpt from Lord Vaughn and Turnip. =)It would interesting to hear Lord Vaughn’s thought on the foppish, but cute Turnip.

by Carole on January 9th, 2010 at 12:08 pm

  3. Either conversation boggles the mind - I keep remembering Turnip with the Black Tulip - but I think I would rather Turnip and Lord Vaughn. Vaughn’s subtle innuendos would bring out the best of Turnip’s naive charm. Now, if you could throw in a little of MIss Gwen, that would make it even better. The three of them would make any conversation convoluted!

  4. Oh the possibilities! I can imagine them and am having a vastly entertaining time doing so. Do we want a sneak peek at Vaughn’s cryptic insults misinterpreted by Turnip as compliments on his waistcoats (heeheehee) or the Dowager Duchess’ blunt cuts to which Turnip could only amiably agree (hahaha). Since the point of a poll is to choose one, I choose the Dowager Duchess, but either would be hugely enjoyable. I can’t wait!

  5. I would have to say Turnip and Vaughn, since they are two of my favorite characters, and so, so incredibly different! I’m sure Turnip wouldn’t be able to make sense of anything Vaughn said, with all his fancy talk, lol. =) I’m so excited!

by Cassie on January 9th, 2010 at 12:41 pm

  6. I have to vote for Vaughn, just because I missed him so much in the 5th book and I assume he’s not going to be in Blood Lily either.

by Carolyn on January 9th, 2010 at 12:45 pm

  7. My vote goes to Vaughn and Turnip. Very amusing, I’m sure.

by Georgia on January 9th, 2010 at 12:45 pm

  8. I vote for the Dowager Dutchess as well, for some reason I’m really looking forward to that conversation!

    by J on January 9th, 2010 at 12:45 pm

  9. I’m going with Turnip and Vaughn, because that’s where my mind went initially. Can’t wait to read the exerpt!

by Amy on January 9th, 2010 at 12:52 pm

  10. Vaughn and Turnip - Definitely!

by Kate P on January 9th, 2010 at 12:54 pm

  11. Hmmm, this is a tough decision but I would rather read the excerpt with Lord Vaughn, he is so intriguing.

by Brooke on January 9th, 2010 at 1:00 pm

  12. My vote is for Vaughn! I just miss his sense of wit and dry sense of humour. Should go over Turnip’s head as usual.

by Hortencia on January 9th, 2010 at 1:06 pm

  13. Turnip and Vaughn!! Any scene involving Vaughn is automatically one of my favorites - he’s just so fun to read. Definitely my favorite character. :D

  17. I vote for Vaughn and Turnip. Just thinking about it makes me laugh out loud.

by Diana on January 9th, 2010 at 1:36 pm

  18. I LOVE Vaughn, but I have to vote for Turnip and the Duchess. Vaughn is too cool to react to Turnip’s (seeming?) obtuseness, but I can only imagine what the Duchess’ response would be. The Duchess doesn’t suffer fools in the same bored way Vaughn would, she just wades right in and starts the verbal swinging.

  19. Turnip and the Dowager. Thank you for posting an excerpt from the book. October is just too far away.

by Emily S on January 9th, 2010 at 3:47 pm

  30. I would <3 to see Turnip and the Dowager Duchess of Dovedale go at it. I think it would be an absolutely hilarious pairing, considering the Dowager is so high-strung along, and Turnip, well…Turnip is just Turnip.

by Kimmie on January 9th, 2010 at 3:53 pm

  31. Anything with Vaughn in it is a winner with me! My vote is for Turnip and Vaughn!

by Catherine L. on January 9th, 2010 at 4:09 pm

  32. Hmmm…I do think he and the dowager duchess would be amusing, but Vaughn is my favorite male character in the entire series, so I think I’d prefer him and Turnip.

by Cho on January 9th, 2010 at 4:34 pm

  33. I have to go with Vaughn and Turnip. I just love Vaughn and his haughtiness!

by Julie C. on January 9th, 2010 at 4:39 pm

  34. Turnip and the Dowager Duchess!

by Ellen on January 9th, 2010 at 4:47 pm

  35. I vote the Dowager Duchess, as I plan on becoming just as curmudgeonly as her as I get older.

by chbs on January 9th, 2010 at 4:51 pm

  36. Turnip and the Dowager Duchess!

by Jessica on January 9th, 2010 at 4:59 pm

  37. I’ll go with Turnip and the Dowager. She’ll have him cowering in fear before he knows what hit him. Good times!

by Susan on January 9th, 2010 at 5:11 pm

  38. I vote for the Dowager and Turnip. She’s so blunt. I’d love for Turnip to have her speechless though. That would be hysterical.

by Beth on January 9th, 2010 at 5:42 pm

  39. Wow i never even thought about the Dowager. lol. I would love to see both of these scenes. They would both be hilarious to see. But i think the Dowager might be funnier than Vaughn in this situation. So i vote for the Dowager and Turnip.

by Julie on January 9th, 2010 at 5:51 pm

  40. I vote the Dowager and Turnip. She has made stronger men jump out windows.

by erin on January 9th, 2010 at 6:01 pm

  41. Dowager and Turnip for sure!!!!! I love how she snips at people and my favorite scene form all the books is her poking the spear at all the men and when Charlotte tells them that a man jumped out a window to avoid her. Best secondary character ever!

by Alex on January 9th, 2010 at 6:09 pm

  42. Turnip and Dowager, definitely!

by Hannah T on January 9th, 2010 at 6:16 pm

by Georgie on January 9th, 2010 at 6:59 pm

  46. I’ll take either, or any other excerpt you with which you choose to tantalize our thirst for more pink, but I guess I’d choose Turnip and Lord Vaughn, as I’m a big Vaughn fangirl. :)

  47. Turnip and the Dowager

The British covers are SO pretty!

by Sarah on January 9th, 2010 at 7:22 pm

  48. Well, any Turnip is good turnip, but I’d like to see him exasperate Vaughn.

by kellie on January 9th, 2010 at 7:27 pm

  49. Turnip and Vaughn!!! So excited to hear the Turnip is getting a book!

by Jess on January 9th, 2010 at 7:39 pm

by Chartreuse on January 9th, 2010 at 8:04 pm

  53. Turnip and Vaughn, hands down. I can’t believe Turnip gets his own book!! Haha.

by Lauren on January 9th, 2010 at 8:19 pm

  54. Turnip and Vaughn. I think they are polar opposites so it should make for interesting interactions. Can’t wait to read the new book and for Turnip’s book. :)

by Krista on January 9th, 2010 at 9:32 pm

  55. Turnip and Vaughn, no doubt about it! :D

by Rebecca on January 9th, 2010 at 9:32 pm

  56. Do you need to ask? Vaughn of course!

by Francesca on January 9th, 2010 at 10:11 pm

  57. Turnip and the Dowager, but it wasn’t easy to choose!

by Trish on January 9th, 2010 at 10:12 pm

  58. Turnip and Vaughn please. Two of my favorite characters, and as different as can be.

I am very much looking forward to Turnip’s book, although I admit I’d hoped he would end up being Jane’s love interest–I had wild fancies about him secretly being a dashing superspy, or somehow, in Inspector Clouseau fashion, a bumbling yet effective agent. I think it was his over-the-top fashion sense that tricked me into thinking he isn’t as he seems. Nevertheless, I am eagerly waiting for his story!

by Veronika on January 9th, 2010 at 10:12 pm

  59. Definitely Turnip and Vaughn! Such wonderful characters whom you have to love at opposite ends of the spectrum.

by Katie F on January 9th, 2010 at 10:40 pm

  60. Definitely the scene with Turnip and the Dowager! The Dowager is just so overbearing - it would be funny to see what she would do with Turnip.

by Emily L. on January 9th, 2010 at 11:06 pm

  61. more Vaughn!??!?!

    Yes please! :)

  65. Turnip and VAUGHN, of course!

by Meg on January 10th, 2010 at 3:31 am

  66. Turnip and Vaughn. Vaughn’s subtle insults going over Turnip’s head will be awesome to read.

    by V on January 10th, 2010 at 3:48 am

  67. I would defenitly think the Dowager Duchess of Dovedale would be more interesting, lord Vaughn wouldn’t want to go to the bother of waisting his time to really get into it with Turnip.

by Katie on January 10th, 2010 at 12:03 pm

  68. With out a doubt Turnip and Vaughn, I hold out hope for Reginald Fitzhugh’s as yet seceret powers of rhetoric.

by Nancy on January 10th, 2010 at 12:07 pm

  69. I would say Vaughn and Turnip because once Turnip is revealed as the international espionage master that he is they’ll have more interesting things to talk about.
