Mini-Contest #2

Six days to go until The Betrayal of the Blood Lily….

But while we’re still talking about The Temptation of the Night Jasmine (which came out in paperback yesterday! yay!), the fabulous Miss Eliza has posted her dreamcasting choice for Night Jasmine’s hero on her website, Strange and Random Happenstance. (You can check out choices for the heroine, Charlotte, here.)

Who would you chose to play Robert?

One commenter, chosen at random, will receive a signed paperback of The Temptation of the Night Jasmine.

  1. As of the time I’m writing this, I’m first! And it’s my birthday! And my choice is a little odd. I imagine Robert to be a little dark and brooding, and for some reason that makes me think of Mark Salling who plays Puck on Glee. Yeah I know it’s strange.

by Christine on January 6th, 2010 at 12:24 pm

  2. Happy birthday, Christine!!! I hope you’re having a wonderful day.

by Lauren on January 6th, 2010 at 12:28 pm

  3. Thanks :-)

by Christine on January 6th, 2010 at 12:33 pm

  4. I think I would cast Philip Winchester from the short-lived NBC show Crusoe. I think he has the right amount of ruggedness mixed with pretty-boy looks one would want in a knight in shining armor.

Besides, I think he would look amazing in knee-high boots and breeches.

by Rachel R on January 6th, 2010 at 12:39 pm

  5. I would say…Sam Worthington. Super gorgeous, and could command a attention in a room.

by Somalt on January 6th, 2010 at 12:43 pm

  6. Martin Henderson (’Bride & Prejudice’) :) I know he hasn’t got blond hair, but I think he’d be a good Robert. He got the brooding/moody thing down as Will Darcy…

by Fran on January 6th, 2010 at 12:52 pm

  7. Hmm…James McAvoy, but that’s because I always imagine him in the romantic lead of books.

by Sealz on January 6th, 2010 at 12:56 pm

  8. I would pick Jonny Lee Miller. I recently watched the new BBC version of Emma, and when I read Night Jasmine he was Robert in my head. Somehow, I see Robert as the most traditionally handsome of your heroes, after Richard perhaps. Maybe that’s just Charlotte’s romantic viewpoint coloring my perceptions though! I like Miss Eliza’s casting a lot, but I would actually have seen him as Geoff.

by Veronika on January 6th, 2010 at 12:59 pm

  9. I think I agree about Sam Worthington. I have only seen him in Terminator Salvation, I did like him in that and he is rather dashing.

by Anastasia on January 6th, 2010 at 12:59 pm

  10. I was thinking about who I would cast and the first person who came to mind was JJ Feild (Death on the Nile, Northanger Abbey, The Ruby in the Smoke, The Secret Life of Mrs. Beeton). He has the blond hair and blue eyes, but I think he could also portray both Robert’s charming, lovely side and his revengeful, moody distant side.

by Katie on January 6th, 2010 at 1:03 pm

  11. What about Matthew Maconaughey? Kind of has that night in shining armor feeling to him. Or maybe he would make a better Miles…..

by Chelsey on January 6th, 2010 at 1:13 pm

  12. *Knight, not night. Geez, I DID take spelling in Elementary school.

by Chelsey on January 6th, 2010 at 1:18 pm

  13. My 1st choice would be Gerard Butler, from The Ugly Truth, because he is a little edgy and dark and that is who I pictured right away when I was reading the book.
My 2nd choice would be Kevin McKidd, from Grey’s Anatomy and Made of Honor, I can totally picture him kissing a mistletoe crowned Charlotte on the roof of Girdings House.
Both men are gorgeous and they both have accents and that helps with the fantasies too!!!!

by Robyn on January 6th, 2010 at 1:24 pm

  14. I had always pictured Henry Cavill as Robert, although he has been suggested as Richard. As long as he’s in there somewhere with tight breeches!

by Susan on January 6th, 2010 at 1:26 pm

  15. I’d have to vote for Michael Douglas, it’s the voice!

by Kelly on January 6th, 2010 at 1:31 pm

  16. At the moment I’m leaning towards Callum Blue. Not exactly sure why, but when I think of Robert he just pops into my head. I guess that’s good enough reason, right? :)

by Rebecca on January 6th, 2010 at 2:00 pm

  17. Matthew Macfadyen!!! I loved him in Pride and Prejudice… although to play Robert he might need to visit the beach for a few days ;)

by Natasha on January 6th, 2010 at 2:07 pm

  18. Part of me would love to say that Alexander Skarsgaard would be amazing as Robert, but I also agree with Rebecca that Callum Blue would be great too. Seriously, if Sean Bean were a bit younger… I would totally vote for him, but he’s just to old to be kissing Charlotte now.

    Ack! Good questions Lauren!

by KMD on January 6th, 2010 at 2:23 pm

  19. i’m not really good at “dreamcasting” so i will just have to go with Miss Eliza’s choice. I love her website, and I think she’s really good at it. (Except one time I would have had to disargree with her, lol) =)

by Cassie on January 6th, 2010 at 2:33 pm

  20. I think I would definitely have to go with Jensen Ackles for my pick for Robert, the Duke of Dovedale. He’s cute he’s clean cut, and he definitely knows how to play the role of a dark, brooding, and all-too-serious hero.

by Kimmie on January 6th, 2010 at 2:45 pm

  21. I think he’s quite dashing and would make an all-around great 19th Century rake. =D

by Kimmie on January 6th, 2010 at 2:46 pm

  22. Oh Cassie, I’m sorry I must have cast somewone wrong for you. :)

Mmmm, J.J. Feild, love him. I’m also sticking with my choice of Stephen Campbell Moore… but I was watching Inkheart the other day and you know, Paul Bettany, he could work…

by Elizabeth aka Miss Eliza on January 6th, 2010 at 2:58 pm

  23. I think Hugh Dancy would be fun (from Confessions of a Shopaholic & Elizabeth I). He’s young enough that he could play well opposite a feisty mother and adventurous younger sister. He could handle the funny bits and has enough presence to pull off dashing, brooding and swashbuckling. Besides, he’s quite fetching. No, he’s not blonde, but with his cute and wavy light brown hair, does it matter? A mask would be very becoming on him too, always a plus. ;^)

by Christy on January 6th, 2010 at 3:08 pm

  24. I’m picturing Rupert Everett. Clearly a straight version of Rupert Everett!

by Amanda on January 6th, 2010 at 3:15 pm

  25. Okay - I had either a momentary flash of genius (or this is a really bad idea…) what do you all think of Samuel West - he was in Jane Eyre in the 90’s and Desperate Romantics. He might be just on this side of too old, but I think that he could do it.

    Thoughts?

by KMD on January 6th, 2010 at 3:17 pm

  26. OK. So silly. I just totally cast for Richard of Selwick. Eek! Have to think about Robert and get back with you. ;^)

by Christy on January 6th, 2010 at 3:18 pm

  27. It just came to me. How about casting Robert with David Boreanaz from Bones, Angel and Buffy the Vampire Slayer? Strong, swashbuckling, protective, compassionate, ex-vampire-with-a-soul, current FBI agent protector and partner with the tad-bit-naive partner who he happens to be in love. Utter perfection.

by Christy on January 6th, 2010 at 3:28 pm

  28. I enthusiatically second Miss Eliza’s suggestion. However, in case a back-up is needed, perhaps Matt Bomer (from the White Collar TV series) could fill in.

by Georgia on January 6th, 2010 at 3:37 pm

  29. I’m picturing Matthew Goode, a somewhat scruffy Matthew Goode. I think he might need to buff up a little, seeing as I imagine all of the men in these books to be tall & broad-shouldered :o)

by Kristie on January 6th, 2010 at 3:41 pm

  30. Oh, while I heart David Boreanaz, he can’t do any kind of accent to save his soul!

by Elizabeth aka Miss Eliza on January 6th, 2010 at 4:24 pm

  31. Eric Bana. He can’t do a british accent but I always pictured dark from the india sun along with the kind eyes.

by Alexandra on January 6th, 2010 at 4:36 pm

  32. Oh I totally agree with Hugh Dancy as Richard or even Colin.

by Alex on January 6th, 2010 at 4:39 pm

  33. I agree with the previous poster that Matthew Macfadyen is the way to go for Robert!

by Alexa on January 6th, 2010 at 5:02 pm

  34. The person I imagined as Robert does not exist to my knowledge, but the first person I thought of was Gerald Butler, I loved him in P.S. I Love You.

by Brittany Keys on January 6th, 2010 at 5:16 pm

  35. Miss Eliza had him as Richard, but I actually pictured Robert as Bradley James (I have a Merlin obsession lol)while I was reading Night Jasmine.

    Christy

by Christy on January 6th, 2010 at 5:32 pm

  36. I like Gerard Butler as Robert.

by Diana on January 6th, 2010 at 6:31 pm

  37. My pick is Rupert Penry Jones! (new BBC version of Persuasion) He does it for me although he have to get a serious tan for the role!

by Hortencia on January 6th, 2010 at 6:43 pm

  38. I did like the suggestion of Phillip Winchester but Charlie Hunnam is my Robert hands down. He is so good at playing the noble but tortured soul.

by Erin on January 6th, 2010 at 6:44 pm

  39. Richard Armitage just because I’m crazy about him.

by Laura B. on January 6th, 2010 at 6:56 pm

  40. I could see Henry Cavill. I always pictured Robert as fair - from the hot India sun.

by Kate P on January 6th, 2010 at 7:53 pm

  41. I’ve always imagine Robert as more of a buff sort of guy. Not bench presser buff, just strong. So i’d have to say that i would definitely cast Gerard Butler as him. Strong and handsome, he’d make a great knight in shining armor :)

by Jennie on January 6th, 2010 at 7:54 pm

  42. I think we should just cast Colin Firth as the hero in every book. Would that be weird? :)

by AngelB on January 6th, 2010 at 8:24 pm

  43. These posts read like a shopping lists of my dream guys :) I don’t think I can do better… maybe Ewan McGregor, if he could do a little rugged

by Rachel on January 6th, 2010 at 8:27 pm

  44. not really for acting, more of just the picture I get in my mind when I think of Robert, Duke of Dovedale…Jacob Young from All My Children is the look that I picture. (the glistening eyes and brooding nature of daytime probably do help that…) He also has that more chilsed feature look going on, which is how I imagine Robert after years in India, and he is blonde hair/blue eye.

again, not really for acting, more of for the portrait of the character.

by Kristen on January 6th, 2010 at 9:00 pm

  45. Sean Biggerstaff from Miss Marple’s “Why didn’t they ask Evans” is my mental Robert.

    by J on January 6th, 2010 at 10:08 pm

  46. J J Field is my choice as well.

I agree that were Samuel West a bit shorter of tooth he would make a good Robert.

by kellie on January 6th, 2010 at 10:20 pm

  47. Hmm hard choice… either JJ Field (LOVE him as Henry Tilney!) or Henry Cavill would be perfect as Robert

by Jessica C on January 6th, 2010 at 10:31 pm

  48. I also am having trouble coming up with someone to match the Robert in my mind! How about Robert Redford? (in his prime and with an accent of course!)
Anyway, loved the book. I am reading it for the third time now!

    by K.S. on January 6th, 2010 at 10:40 pm

  49. I think Alexander Skarsgard would be a perfect Robert!

by Hannah T on January 6th, 2010 at 11:34 pm

  50. You know, I’m just not quite the quick thinker on this, but after watching my ULTFAV tv show, I realized the perfect person for Robert would be Taylor Kitsch (aka Tim Riggins on FNL and Gambit from Xmen Wolverine). Hot, rugged, heart of gold, but makes some of the stupid decisions.

Can he pull off the accent, don’t know. Don’t know if I care if he’s walking around in knee britches and a monk habit. :)

by AngelB on January 6th, 2010 at 11:38 pm

  51. Josh Duhamel comes to mind for Robert, he rugged but cleans up nice too.

by Amanda on January 6th, 2010 at 11:59 pm

  52. I actually like Stephen Campbell Moore for Geoff–cute and interesting, not at first glance the sort of football-player “hot.” Intense eyes. The whole sexy librarian thing going on.

Robert is like Rory’s Dean, a sort of…blond, knee-breeched Lee Pace. Mmm.

by Meg on January 7th, 2010 at 12:04 am

  53. Got to agree with Charlie Hunnam! He was definitely my first pick as well. Cute, blonde, and British- he’s perfect for Robert.

by Ashley on January 7th, 2010 at 12:20 am

  54. Maybe David Boreanaz just hasn’t had the inspiration of the perfect script nor a good diction coach to bring out his inner accent. I must give him the benefit of the doubt. ;^)

by Christy on January 7th, 2010 at 12:27 am

  55. Maybe David Boreanaz just hasn’t had the inspiration of the perfect script nor a good diction coach to bring out his inner accent. I must give him the benefit of the doubt. ;^) Ooo, this is fun, though I’m embarrassed to confess I’m not familiar with several of these actors.

by Christy on January 7th, 2010 at 12:29 am

  56. I could see Ben Barnes playing Robert.

by Katelin on January 7th, 2010 at 12:43 am

  57. You know, I didn’t even know Charlie Hunnam was British. My guys love SAMCRO. It’s going to kill them to find out he’s really British. It’s so “not motorcycle gang”.

I can’t wait to tell them.

by AngelB on January 7th, 2010 at 12:43 am

  58. So we have a challenge to pose to David Boreanaz then :P And yeah for Bradley James fans!

by Elizabeth aka Miss Eliza on January 7th, 2010 at 12:47 am

  59. Richard Armitage (North and South)

by amanda on January 7th, 2010 at 2:13 am

  60. I definitely agree with Phillip Winchester or possibly Christopher Egan (from Letters to Juliet)

by Emily L. on January 7th, 2010 at 3:15 am

  61. My complete girly vote is for Paul Walker. While I don’t know about his ability to accent, I think he could pull a steely glint if needed. And he can do action.

by PM on January 7th, 2010 at 3:32 am

  62. I have always imagined Robert to be Rupert Penry-Jones from Jane Austen’s “Persuasion” and BBC’s “Spooks”, as someone upthread mentioned. :)

by Bryana on January 8th, 2010 at 2:01 am

  63. I was thinking Rupert Friend (recently in The Young Victoria, and Pride and Prejudice). He’s handsome, and very talented. I think he would do well as Robert because he can command a room, yet invoke childish giggles just from his smile. Previously mentioned Richard Armitage would be a good chose as well.
