Weekend Reading

Another week, another Friday, another weekend to indulge in some leisure reading…. Since I so enjoyed hearing what everyone was reading last weekend (my To Be Purchased list has reached whole new proportions), I think this may need to become a weekly topic.

So here’s what’s on my list for this weekend:

1. Natural Born Charmer by Susan Elizabeth Phillips.

It was almost exactly a year ago that my little sister gave me my first Susan Elizabeth Phillips book, Breathing Room. Is it too pathetic that I practically remember the exact date? Last summer was the Summer of SEP for me, slowly treating myself to one book at a time as I read my way through her backlist. I have a hard time picking a favorite, since every time I re-read one, I remember quite how much I like that particular one. Until I re-read the next one. Right now, I’d say it’s a toss up between Breathing Room and Nobody’s Baby But Mine. Or maybe Dream A Little Dream. Anyway, I was ridiculously happy to see that her latest is out– even though once I finish it, it will be back to re-reads!

2. The Blue Sword by Robin McKinley.

Maybe it’s several people mentioning The Blue Castle recently that’s given me blue on the brain. Or maybe it’s that there’s something vaguely India-like about McKinley’s imaginary kingdom of Damar and I’m about to start Book VI (set in India) next week. So it practically counts as research, right?

3. The manuscript of The Temptation of the Night Jasmine by me.

My last read through before turning in my final revisions for Book V! At least, I really hope they’re the final revisions. Sometimes, final has a way of being not so final. Especially when revisions are involved.

First!

My weekend is compiled of a band festival (bleargh), my sister’s greaudation…from law school…and tapping away at my story, which is curious, considering the website this is being posted on.

My weekend is going to be filled with marathon rehearsal sessions of HAMLET for my lit class… lots of coffee and pizza… bring on the pepto!

but before that, i get to go see Prince Caspian- in light of that, is life really all that bad? I think not!

But if my trig homework were to magically decide to do itself, it’d be a much appreciated bonus…

I’ll be finishing the first book in the new trilogy of Celeste Bradley’s, about dukes, today (Desperately Seeking a Duke) and will be starting the second tomorrow, The Duke Next Door.

My weekend is going to be working on my dissertation and a classic movie night with my husband! And a bit of reading a bio of Catherine the Great. Probably lesson plans for my class on Monday.

Lauren, if Pink V, er, The Temptation of the Night Jasmine doesn’t come out soon I might actually finish my degree. Do you want that on your conscience?

My weekend consists of entertaining my sister and her boy friend who are out from Arizona, but I’m finding time to read both Joseph Andrews by Henry Fielding and Vanity Fair Thomas Makepeace Thackeray. Its all just a grand procrastination plan as I put off writing huge mythology paper:)

My weekend consists of moving my youngest daughter home from Wofford College, after completing her Freshman year. She is home and by looking at all the stuff piled in my living room, I am wondering how in the heck we managed to stuff it all in my car. She is the one who got me hooked on your books Lauren! I bought her the first as a gift (she is a major bookworm and can be quite anti-social at times)and she has been hooked ever since! Me too! It is funny though because I have read Crimson Rose and she hasn’t! She says she has to go back and re-read the first three so not to miss any details! I hope you enjoy your weekend reading for pleasure as I am sure she will soon find herself with her nose in a book reading for pleasure (something she hasn’t been able to do since Christmas Break) once she wakes up and gets herself out of bed. I continue to read the Seduction of the Crimson Rose after finally finishing the marathon reading of “I am Red” from last weekend. Has anyone ever read “The Red and the White” by Stendahl? It’s on the shelf patiently waiting it’s turn with the rest of “the pile” after being bumped by the Seduction-

Hi, Amy! You seem to have a color theme going! I’ve also been meaning to re-read “The Red and the Black”. I have vague memories of finding it depressing in high school, but I have a feeling I’ll read it rather differently now.

Hi, Beth! Please thank your daughter for me for getting you hooked on the Pink books. : ) I helped bring my little sister home from her freshman year this past Tuesday, and despite leaving a few boxes behind in storage, I was afraid one of us was going to have to make the trip back strapped to the roof….

This weekend I studied for my last finals ever. I will be graduating with a degree in English next Sunday and then who knows. I read a little of the Jane Austen Book Club this weekend and just purchased Crimson Rose. So sorry it has taken me so long to get it! Lots of homework this semester =) Can’t wait to dive in…

I’m reading The Host by Stephenie Meyers. It’s starting slow, but it’s still good.

The Host is such an amazing book. I couldn’t put it down from the start, although Maggie is right in that the beginning is a bit slower. Seriously, I loved that book and I definitely recommend it!!!!

Thank you for all of the great suggestions. I am hitting the end of my quarter, and am desperate for things to avoid writing papers and studying for finals, and personally there is no better procrastination tool than a great book, so keep the suggestions coming!!

Hi Lauren, I am also a fan of Susan Elizabeth Phillips. I am a HUGE football fan, so I love that her “Stars” books involve the sport. And her story lines are fantastic. My favorite is Dream a Little Dream; I love it! I hope you like Natural Born Charmer, it was a goodie. I have this weird rule for myself that whenever I buy a book for fun, like the Pink books, I also have to buy a book on a subject I’m not so familiar with. So I have a plethora of chick lit novels, and than I also have books on: world history, politics, sports, biographies of people I’ve never heard of, and super random subjects like the history of whaling (ODD, I know). It’s a weird habit, but I have something for everyone on my book shelves, and I’m never at a loss for a conversation starter:) I definitely have a few books that I haven’t got to reading yet already at home, but I think I might go and pick up one that has been recommended in this forum for my weekend reading:) Have a good one!

India–I’m so excited!

Maybe it’s just that era, but I really enjoy fiction set in India in the 1800s. I’m excited to see what you create.
